This is undoubtedly the number one attraction of a visit to Funchal. The flowers are beautiful and the views spectacular. Any visit is an adventure, as it involves taking either the cable car or bus up to Monte, then travelling by cable car across the...More

One of the most popular locations that you can visit in Funchal is Botanical Garden. The transfer from Funchal until there is itself a beautiful ride ! Changes twice the cable car and make short walk from one to another. If you have inspiration to...More

The Botanical Garden of Madeira is the islands' nature preserve in microcosm. It is beautifully maintained and well thought out as to arrangement. The manor house has a collection of birds, fish, and mammals native to the island, but the exhibits are a bit old...More

Perhaps it was down to the date visited but the gardens seemed pretty neglected. The water features in particular were pretty disgusting. Stagnant and full of algae / blanket weed. As this is one of the main attractions fed by its own cable car I...More

Good place to walk around and checkout the views of Funchal. Can get crowded, if you are then with lots of cruise ships. Did enjoy the colors. You really need to be a garden person to really enjoy this place.

Going down the smaller cable car from the mountain top was exciting, but alas, the gardens were not. Very steep cobble stone paths (uneven) so wear flat sturdy shoes

We visited this garden on a combine ticket with the cable car. Huge variety of flora including a large cactus garden. As everything in Madeira there are wide but steep paths but extensive views from look out points

Very interesting. Lots of different themed areas. And the famous "chequered" floral flower beds as seen on many Madeira visitor pictures. A bit hilly so not easy perhaps for people with mobility difficulties. But well worth the visit.

Plus of course you can get there and back by cable car although noting it's two separate legs and not cheap but you can do as part of a trip up to the town further inland (forgot the name!)

We went up to here in November and sadly found there was thick mist around and we could not even see where we were going. It cleared a little later in the day, but we would love to return when it is clear. We are thinking of returning to Funchal in February or March, so can I ask if we would have more chance of a clear day at that time. I realise weather can never be predicted, but would like a fighting chance of some clear days, or would consider visiting at another time of year.

Hi where do you get the number 31 bus from to the Botanical Gardens and how long is the journey? We will be staying at the Four Views Monumental Lido in August. We went stayed there last year and wanted to go to the gardens but I just couldn't bring myself to get on the cable cars due to a fear of heights. Thanks
