We took a car tour of the north coast of the island which included the highest point! Clearly from photos in guides you can be above the clouds here - unfortunately most of the time we were in the middle of clouds with very low...More

Two trails are closed and there is new one (it wasn't there 5 years ago) on the steel stairs. This trail is more though. It's good to have light with you and good shoes for easier walk.

So I made it back. If you leave a peak and return to a peak, does that mean you summit-ed twice? We left Pico Arieiro at sunrise above the clouds. If you are early enough, you see the sun come up under the clouds, amazing....More

Must do. Best view of Madeira. Easy to get to by car and park. We wakker about 1.5 jours from starring point and then turned back. Was worth it.

Excellent with a sea of cloud. You just need to have luck on your side as it’s not always clear. Weather was great. Excellent walk over the mountain.

Yes we rented a car. The roads were in great shape and very easy to navigate. We used Google offline map and other than a few hairpin turns it was a great drive up.

I got it on my GPS (Garmin loaded with free OpenStreetMap navigational map) by just searching for "Pico do Arieiro" as point of interest.
