Don't bother, long steep walk down the hill, to find a very neglected garden, and long walk up again. Total waste of time.

We arrived in Monte via the cable-car and got our bearings (or so I thought) at the Igreja do Monte. Unfortunately we twice got off track while looking for this quinta as there are no signs. The walk from the Igreja is perhaps five minutes...More

We deliberately headed to visit Emperor’s Gardens as we were interested in visiting the place where Emperor Blessed Charles of Austria, died. He is buried in the nearby Monte Church. When we got there the main east gate was closed and it directed us to...More

Only one Euro entry fee. Such a beautiful and peaceful place. Go up the hill towards the car park as lower gate is closed. Really hope the house is rebuilt. A lot of work to be done but well worth a visit.

Having driven up to Monte to see the toboggans, we parked in an official car park right next to the gardens. We mistook them for the Botanical Gardens of deserved fame but should have realised our mistake as soon as we set foot down the...More

What a disappointment as it is still closed. looked through the gates and it looked really interesting, but needs updating. Would be really good for garden lovers

Lovers of a ruined garden will revel at this aerial hilltop site. Subtropical it certainly is with a mix of wild and formal areas where this temperature ensures prolification of colour and texture. Great walking opportunity back down the hill foe late lunch

Took a taxi up here especially to see the gardens and house and the whole place is closed. Really disappointed as they are still advertised. I just hope they will re open soon.

The gardens are simply just not up to scratch. Very run down, with untidy paths and no signage. The house itself looked derelict. Good views from the Malakof gardens down towards Funchal. There are better gardens to see in Madeira than this one.

I did not enter this attraction, as I felt that after riding the telpher (and sightseeing the entire city of Funchal), paying for that was just unnecessary. It is beautiful, though, as I could see from the outer wall. Unnecessary, though.
