This spot is very important in Portugals history: it was one of the first palaces the Portuguese monarch stayed in. People say that Portugal was 'born' in Barcelos.

One more piece of the puzzle of the fascinating history of Portugal can be found in the ruins of this castle, sitting on top of a small hill overlooking Cávados River. The drawings in the tiles show how imposing and magnificent it once was.

These are cool old ruins of yesterday. Open to the public to explore. Good place to have lunch and enjoy the breathtaking vistas. Don't miss this spot! I would come back.

I enjoyed the walk to the ruins, the scenery is gorgeous and while what's displayed in the former paço is by no means outstanding, it is laid graciously. Go see it!

From the ruins of the old castle you get a beautiful landscape; you overlook the river the medieval bridge and the pilgrims’ hostel. In fact Barcelos has been a stopover for pilgrims along many centuries and the pillory illustrates it quite well depicting the legend...More

You can find historical heritage in a unique archeological collection in the heart of the town. The surrounding landscape is full of medieval buildings including the medieval bridge, framed by the Cávado river. Excellent for ex-libris photographs.
