On the approach to the castle, we popped into the small Igreja de Sao Miguel do Castelo. According to tradition, King Afonso Henriques (1111-1185) was baptised in this small Romanesque church. It has served as a royal chapel and a parochial church. It is a...More

This small Romanesque church is well worth a short visit. After entering on can walk around the perimeter which ropes off the gravestones set into the floor. There is a small information notice with a plan of the building.

On our walking tour of Guimaraes, we passed by this chapel on our way down to the historic centre. It is an absolute gem!

The floor is what to look at in this historic chapel. Some of the stones look like from pagan times although they are among the gravestones of more recent times. Allow 15 minutes for this free visit next to the castle.

The first king of Portugal, Alfonso Henriques, was baptised in this simple Romanesque chapel in the grounds of the castle. The atmosphere inside is wonderful - the floor is lined with medieval gravestones.

Simple, spare, little Romanesque chapel where the first king of Portugal was baptized. Interesting for its historical value as well as its very pure decor.
