I like the modern fountain although it’s a bit hard to see amongst the umbrellas. Not worth a special trip but do look if you are in the area.

The steep street leading down to the Cube Fountain is a sight to behold. Outdoor patios with umbrellas neighbour the fountain. It is a place to sit to relax with a beautiful view of the river and Gaia.

Fonte do Cubo is located in Praca Ribeira which is a very old, historical public square. The square itself dates back to the 14th century, and it was a busy commercial centre, particularly of fish. In the 1980s some archaeological excavations took place in this area, and an old fountain was uncovered. The bronze sculpture of the Cube was then added and in the early 200s a statue of Saint John the Baptist was also placed in the niche of the fountain. When the square is busy it is difficult to see the sculpture, particularly with all the cafe covers being all open for the outdoor seating. Still it is worth visiting, as the square is a lovely spot to be at by the river and the Dom Luis Bridge.

This big bronze cube is located on Ribeira Square. It is integrated into the reconstruction of an old fountain that was found in the area. There are some sculptured pigeons on the surface sharing the space with their living models.

This fountain was outside our hotel in the Ribeira square. You don’t notice it when the tables and tents are out. Good place to meet friends.
