We were disappointed since you couldn't walk around due to a major restoration. Nevertheless the less it's very impressive and you can easily imagine what it was like in the 18c when shiploads of gold was arriving from Brazil.

From the outside the building seems nothing special but the inside is a work of art. It is packed with carvings which need to be seen and covered in gold leaf. The church is not far from the top of the funicular railway.
The most intricate carvings we have seen anywhere. The guy at the door who takes the tickets tells you to not take photos - which we found incredible. But, everyone was anyway. How can one not? It is fantastic!!!
The Church of Santa Clara was under restoration when I visited. However, the walls are packed with intricate carving, guilded completely in gold. It is well worth the visit!
Got taken here on our Tuk-Tuk tour. Absolutely fantastic views overlooking the city and the river Douro from the grounds.
