About
Clérigos Tower is the foremost undisputed landmark of Porto and a reference in the city's history. Clérigos Tower opened its doors in 1763, becoming the highest bell tower of Portugal, with over 75 metres. In 1753 the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni was invited to design and build this magnificent Heritage, considered National Monument since 1910. The famous church was built in the eighteenth century, between 1732 and 1749 and this was the most emblematic work of the architect Nicolau Nasoni. Is one of the most beautiful temples of baroque feature, and a reference in the history of Porto. The Exhibitions allow to discover the history of the Brotherhood of Clérigos, admire pieces from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century, in painting, furniture, jewellery and vestment collections. Christus collection, on the 3 floor, is a trip through time and space where art and religion complement each other.

    225 steps!
Even our ancient legs managed to carry us up to the viewing gallery. Most of the way up there are people coming down. Be friendly, let each other pass! The last few steps are on a metal staircase, replacing the worn originals. The views are spectacular, over the city, the river and across to the Atlantic Ocean. Unbelievably visitors had dropped plastic bottles and even scribbled graffiti up there. There was an exhibition highlighting the problems of plastic pollution in the seas.

    Watch out for the crowds!
We visited late in the day and it didn’t seem busy at first. The view from the top was amazing and the employees were friendly and efficient. The exhibition was interesting. However, there was one big issue! No one seemed to be monitoring how many people were at the top, despite buying a timed ticket! That meant when we wanted to come down we couldn’t! The stairs were filled with people who wanted to come up and didn’t understand that they couldn’t until some people came down from the full viewing platform. After some cross words all round, in many different languages, we got to the bottom but this last little bit did take the shine off what could have been a real highlight of our trip.

Worth the few euros for the views
The views from the top were beautiful! It was very crowded and made it a little difficult to get around but it was worth it. When you pay to climb the tower you also get to view the top parts of the church. There is a pipe organ concert every day at noon and if you enter the tower at that time you can watch the organist close up.

    Head for heights
Great value for money. There is a small museum as well. The qclimb to the top is not as bad as I thought but the staircase is very narrow and gets narrower at the top. Not very many places to pass people coming back down. The views from the top are fantastic

    Lovely church and view
The church is gorgeous and you get to walk around it as part of the tower visit. The tower was not particularly dificult and there were great views from the top. You can see across the city and river and it was a great place to get a sense of where everything was in Porto.

    Actually enjoyed it!
Hadn't planned to do this at all, but was pleasantly surprised. The climb to the top of the tower was relatively easy. I am recovering from knee surgery so was a little nervous. It was actually OK and not too crowded. We're not ones for churches etc, but it was quite interesting to see.

Recognizable Porto monument, prepare for the climb (on the hill and the tower)
This church tower is another recognizable monument of Porto. You can climb it, but for it you have to pay around 8 euros. It is supposedly the tallest "building" in Porto built on the top of the Porto's biggest hill. Speaking of the hill, be prepared for climbing, so if you are not in condition, go slow.

    Impressive views
Great views - impressive building. Can get very busy. It takes about an hour to get around - more if you want to linger reading more info on the various exhibits. The stairs to the tower aren’t for the claustrophobic - they are fairly narrow and it is difficult for people to pass each other. I felt more could be done to steward the up and down activity, to make it safer and more comfortable. Go early in peak season to avoid the crowds and have a more enjoyable visit.

    Fabulous views
I nearly chickened out of ascending the tower steps since initial few leading to start of tower were of the tight, enclosed, spiraling variety, which triggered premature anxiety. However the steps in tower itself are easy to navigate with continuous railing on one side and a small landing every few steps. Visiting the museum occurs prior to ascending the tower. Definitely recommend midweek if possible and earliest in day to avoid what other reviews mention of challenges of 2-way stairway traffic. It was extremely windy at top despite calm morning…just be prepared to hold onto hats. We didn’t appreciate the heavily advertised evening light shows which occur within the church itself and a displayed “nature tree” of sorts, claiming to somehow bridge earth and heaven, considering this is apparently a catholic church?? But the exhibits in the museum section were very interesting.

Nice climb to one of Porto's landmarks
Great historic monument. I climbed the stairs up, was lucky it was open at night the day I went. It was a bit tight, but totally worth it. It gets a bit windy at the top, so take a jacket.

In the historical part of the city of Porto, you have also the “Torre dos Clérigos” who got inaugurated in the year 1750. This tower and the “Casa da Irmandade”, which connects the church and the tower and once hosted the other services of the “Irmandade dos Clérigos”. Designed by architect Nicolau Nasoni, this set is one of the most notable examples of late-Baroque style in Portuguese territory and has been classified as a National Monument since 1910. You can see the tower from the outside, for the inside you have to pay a fee, and also for the museum. When you are entering and going up into the tower, you have a splendid view over the city of Porto, but beware of the steps you need to do until you arrive on the top.

We wanted to go up the tower to see the views of the city. We were not permitted before 6pm to but a ticket for just the tower as the museum was open so had to ‘walk through’ the museum to get to the steps.
Once up the steps the view is great. Difficult getting up as merc to stop to let people pass coming done - it’s very narrow. If you are anxious about being close to people and Covid I would not recommend.

Not bad viewing point. When I arrived was told tickets to the top of the tower are sold on time slots of every 30mins.

There wasn’t much of a queue, waited about 10mins.

The stairs to the top are very narrow, I stopped to let people coming down through, however many people were very rude and didn’t even say thank you.

The view at the top is nice, however felt the view from Miradouro Da Vitória is better.

Tickets cost €6 and includes a museum.

Besides being g a great piece of history, this tower is great to use as a reference point as you travel around the city. It’s old and could use a bit of “touch up” work, but it is amazing. The location is also great in the city where you could sip coffee at a number of cafes around the base and look up and marvel at the view.

It is helpful to climb up to get a great view of the city and a sense where everything lies. At the top are bronze plaques pointing out all the major tourist attractions. Very windy at the top. The attached church had an organ recital where my wife waited while i climbed the tower. Church is free, fee to climb the tower.

We arrived at 11:00 a.m., stood in line for tickets until 11:30 a.m., stood around waiting for our noon entry time, toured most the facility by 12:30 p.m., but then stood in line to access the tower for 30 more minutes. After climbing to the top, we took a couple of panoramic pictures of Porto, walked back down, and exited the building at roughly 1:30 p.m. in the afternoon. That’s a 2.5-hour commitment for a church interior that’s no more impressive than others in town, and a view that can be had for free elsewhere.

You’d better REALLY want to see Clérigos Tower and be willing to lose 2.5 hours from your day! My advice is to skip this time suck altogether, see the interior of nearby Ingreja de São José das Taipas for free (which is nearly as impressive and only a 3-minute walk west), and get your stellar city views from the top of the Dom Luís I Bridge instead of this overrated tower. Take my advice!

Having read the reviews I was unsure whether we should bother with the Tower but was glad we did. We queued for a short time around 4pm and were asked to come back for 5pm. Beautiful church interior and good views of Porto from the top of the tower, particularly enjoyed the signage which showed the main buildings/points of interest that you could see from the top.

The church was nothing special, you can go in the church for free or pay for a ticket to go in the tower. They only sell so many in half an hour slot, so you will probably get a ticket and have to wait half an hour or an hour until your time slot. The tower gave a good view over Porto but was uncomfortably crowded at the top, you could hardly move. I've no idea why they don't do a one way system round the top.

If buying a ticket here just got you into and up to the top of the tower, the cost would be well worth it. But in addition, you get to tour the attached church as well which is equally beautiful inside. The highlight is of course the view from the tower with 360 degree views of this beautiful old city.
