Get up the tower early (09:00) and then visit the church

There is not much special about this church. There are some interesting artifacts and artwork. Otherwise, a special trip to see this is not necessary.

This is a lovely church and it is very grand, but personally, I prefer the stunning azulejo churches. This is lovely, and you should visit, but don't prioritise it over the others in the city. The rower is unbelievably busy, so you will have to queue for a very long time.

Entry to the church is free and not crowded and is best combined with a visit to the tower as that also gets you to look into the church from above. I gather this is the only oval church in Portugal and the dome fell down twice during construction.

I didn't bother to go up the tower because the lines were too long. Maybe better to go on a weekday if you want the view from the top of the tower? I did visit the church, though, which was stunning. The whole building is the masterwork of the 18th century expatriate Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, whose work is all... More

I didn't visit the church itself, just went up the tower for the view. Well worth it, although lots of steps, of course. Best view of Porto. Try to go there at an off-peak time: I was stranded at the top in a traffic jam for a while waiting to come back down as a large group of made their... More

Perhaps most people go for the tower, as I did, which is great and interesting with good views of the city. Be sure to visit the exhibits and then tour around the middle (almost secretive) walls before the actual interior. I'll say right now that I have visited many churches in Porto, Italy, France and elsewhere that are more ornate... More

Church was great but staff were really unhelpful. My pregnant wife asked politely to use the bathroom and was refused because we needed a ticket for which there was a long queue. When challenged they just shrugged their shoulders! Very upset!

The altar is simply captivating: So much gold and amazing marble. The vault ceiling and beautiful pipe organ also adds a particular note. Best to visit when they have an organ concert.

Not to be missed when you visit the tower, is the gorgeous and apparently recently renovated church. It is a haven for prayer and contains many outstanding sculptures and architectural features.
