This beach is below what we expect of Portugal's beaches , however if a visitor to Porto and have an urge for a sea dip it is ok.

This is the first beach beside the river mouth and long break water. Also the first beach from the tram. Normal for this side of the Douro, golden sand, narrow and rocks at each end. Get a good strong wind incoming.

This is an area that is easily explored having gotten the old tram from the city centre it then takes about 25 mins to get to the drop off point which is effectively adjacent to the lighthouse (can't really be missed). As with all beaches the enticing factor is largely weather dependant but the whole area is worth a wander and not just the beach. Also do think about walking back into town as it takes circa 45 mins but is very pleasant with lots of bars/cafes and you definitely see a bit more on foot !!

Visited Praia do Carneiro with my wife after we had had a walk along the pier to view the lighthouse. If looking towards the lighthouse head on, then this beach is directly to the right. It is the closest of Porto's beaches to the mouth of the River Douro. The old breakwater and lighthouse mark the southern end of the beach and the entrance to the river. Behind the beach is a 16th century fortress built to defend the mouth of the Douro. We wouldn't describe it as one of Porto's best beaches to spend the whole day on as the sand is coarse, and the water quality is not of the best, but a great location on a stormy day to see and photograph waves crashing over the lighthouse. We used the STCP number 500 promenade service bus to get to the location. We alighted at the stop 'Igreja Da Foz' and walked from there through the tranquil 'Jardim do Passeio Alegre' park.
