I lived this stunner of a building that simply oozes character and history. It was the town hall once upon a time and is adjacent to the equally beguiling Sè or Cathedral. As it was once the most important building in Porto, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised by it's resilient elegance. From the plaza in front the Casa de Camara is simply magnificent and adds hugely to the experience of climbing up to see the cathedral complex. I believe a lot was done to save it from dereliction back in the day, I'm so glad they did because its ibe of my favourite things I've seen in Porto.

It is very easy for tourists to overlook the Casa da Camara and not realise that this odd building is actually of some historical significance. It is only a few metres away from the Se Cathedral, yet it is easily ignored by many! Actually this tower was built sometime during the 14th or 15th centuries and served as the centre of government of the local area for a very long time. It was built right on the edge of the walls that surround the hill where the Cathedral stands. It was in this building that the twenty four representatives of the Trades of the city met to discuss city affairs. It was only abandoned as a Town Hall when it was realised that the building was falling apart! It suffered terribly in 1875 after a huge fire practically destroyed it completely. The building was remodelled in the year 2000, to resemble the original. Today it functions as a Tourist Office, providing useful and helpful information to visitors. Worth a visit!

This fifteenth-century building made of granite is located only seven meters from the walls of the Se Cathedral. The small tower-like building can be easily missed because of the more impressive cathedral building.

Casa da Camara, the Old Town Hall, is located next to Porto Cathedral. The external appearance matched the surrounding ones and visitors are likely to miss this memorable structure during their visits there. Do take a few photos on this building and compared with that of the existing City Hall to see the difference.
