- Tina Z1,001 contributionsAmazing views, beautiful church, nice surroundingsThe views from the top are amazing, there is also a spot where there is a sign appointing to all different attractions down in the city. You have a perfect view of the river Lima uniting with the Atlantic Ocean. Incredible! The church in this neo-byzantine style is beautiful, the stained glass windows in the form of flower look beautiful. The entrance was free when I visited since they were repairing something on the church and because of those works you cannot currently climb all the way to the top. If you are interested in ancient ruins, they are also nearby. The surroundings are also nicely decorated. Definitely a must see in Viana do Castelo.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten April 15, 2024

A ten minutes ride on the cablecar, which only cost a few Euros, and you arrive at destination. Awesome views of Viana and the beaches in the distance. Great place to spend a few hours admiring the Sanctuary.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 6, 2024
- MC8509Michigan20 contributionsGorgeous Exterior Inside a bit DisappointingThe outside of the church is simply gorgeous and the views of the countryside from the church make it well worth a visit. However, I was a bit disappointed in the interior. It was fairly modestly decorated inside compared to the many beautiful churches we visited throughout Portugal. The two stained glass windows were very nice.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 21, 2024
- Marjo RVantaa, Finland77 contributionsWorth the visit!Very beautiful inside and worth the visit. Please note that if you want to climb the tower, you have to continue climbing after the lift to the first level. The stairs after the lift are first extremely narrow, you cannot even wear your backpack. After that you have to climb another set of very steep stairs. Can be demanding for people with fear of confined spaces or heights. However, the views are awesome!Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten August 7, 2024
- Tony McMahonLondon, United Kingdom393 contributionsGreat exterior and view but not an amazing interiorDo not expect stunning interiors - I've been here several times and that is not the reason to visit. The experience is going to the top of the mountain - either by funicular or walking (which is a steeper climb than you expect) and then wandering around outside looking at the church and the view. The shrine to Saint Lucy is very camp and surrounded by wax eyes - she is the patron saint of opticians.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten September 5, 2024

The building is on top of the mountain and can normally be reached by a funicular (Tram). We were there in October of 2022 when the tram was broken. We took a taxi to the site, and walked the grounds. There is an entry charge to the tower and it is not for the faint of heart, dollar wise or climbing the stairs. The main entry is on the side of the building and it is open to the public for viewing.
There is a restaurant on the downside of the parking lot, and a snack bar on the park side of the site. To the right there is a high wall and staircase that leads to a road that leads to a very well preserved Roman Ruin that is worth the walk.
Make sure you have a way to get back to the city, we had to have the restaurant owner phone a taxi service as there are few that will come up and get you. (He knew which would) - And we thank him)

Fantastic views and lots to see at the top. Above the church is a beautiful old hotel and it is nice to sit on the balcony and have a coffee. There are also Roman ruins nearby to explore. Worth the trip. There is a funicular, but it was not operational. For five euros a taxi will take you up the hill. To descend there are five hundred steps that take you back to the city centre.

While the church itself was not very interesting to us – it was so plain and rather unattractive, the view from the terraces was quite stunning. The view of the ocean and the waves pounding onto the fabulous golden sandy beaches was stunning. There was also a fine view up the Lima valley. We took the funicular up but walked back down.

Santa Luzia is well worth a visit, as it sits on top of the mountain with stunning views over Viana and beyond. A lift is available to take you to the domed roof, but then access to the top viewing area (Zimbório) is by a narrow stone spiral staircase which opens up giving a 360 degree view. A separate lift is available which takes you to a viewing platform at the side of the domed roof. Stairs are available for the whole climb if you feel fit enough instead of using the elevator. The view from the top is well worth the climb, but definitely not suitable for anyone with mobility problems or claustrophobia. The temple is set in pretty gardens and has a couple of cafes and souvenir shops. It can be reached either by car, foot or funicular and attracts quite a lot of tourism especially during the summer months.

Boa tarde, quanto tempo se gasta, em média, a visitar o Santuário e o que está em volta?
Written May 24, 2020

Sorry for delay, admission is free. If you like going up to bell tower, each has separate elevator and you have to pay. It was 1 euro each. The one on the right has extra narrow steps to the top, the one on left has whilchair access.
