About
This ancient citadel, built in the fifth century B.C., towers over the city and is home to some of the most impressive ancient ruins, buildings, and artifacts. The most famous temple, the Parthenon, was dedicated to the goddess Athena and is considered the peak of Greek art. You can avoid long lines by joining a walking tour of the site. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring sunscreen, as the walk up the hill can be steep and exposed to the sun. For the best experience, visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the heat and for fewer crowds. – Tripadvisor

- DLKWI88Brookfield, Wisconsin310 contributionsWear good shoes! The climb up is very steep with uneven terrain. Wear good shoes and watch your step. A week or so before our arrival in Athens, we saw on the news that they were limiting visitors and you had to buy your tickets in advance, which we did. Once we got there, we couldn't believe the throngs of people that were also in our time slot. The stairway to the very top was clogged with what seemed like hundreds of people and it seemed like it was going to take us 30 minutes or more to get up there but it moved quickly. That was all quickly forgotten once we got to the top. It is a beautiful site and the pictures we took are breathtaking.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten October 3, 2023
- Shivani S23 contributionsThumbs up for the Acropolis! As expected, a very busy site to see. Definitely recommend seeing it during just before and during sunset if possible, absolutely breath-taking. We were able to see the Acropolis from our hotel rooftop, but seeing it up close was amazing. If it's the first time you're going, I suggest going with a tour so you can learn and understand the understated history that they share with you. Only downside is there is currently restoration work on most of the monuments in Athens, including the Acropolis, so it was not as beautiful to see from one side of the structure. Otherwise, definitely worth seeing.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten October 3, 2023
- Nic JEdmonton, Canada15 contributionsIts a hikeGoing through the Acropolis and its hillside was breathtaking. Seeing certain places up close was a highlight of my trip. However I will say that it is not for everyone as you are climbing through the hillside on the way to the Parthenon and temple of Nike at the top, so it you are not one for hikes or inclines be warned. If you are, the views are breathtaking and taking a moment to relize how much history has gone on in the area you are walking through is very eye opening. If you are able to when in Athens, highly suggested.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten October 4, 2023
- Haswell4Navarre, Florida153 contributionsWorth the Athens visitVery scenic and historical. After reading many reviews we followed other travelers advice and entered near the Dionysius museum. The path/climb was not very strenuous. The line at the ticket office was short. We chose to go early-mid afternoon to avoid the cruise ship tours. It was warm-mid- high 80s F. The only bottle neck was near the entrance to the Parthenon. There weren’t many areas that we were at a standstill but just a slower pace at the stairs. I can imagine how miserable this would be in the heat of summer. The whole Acropolis is very scenic and historical. There is more to see than just the Parthenon. The Parthenon is still under reconstruction and so portions have scaffolding. Pictures are still beautiful and the scope of renovation is just amazing. Of course there will always be plenty of visitors and those taking selfies that take too long. But with a lot of patience and park bought water ( you can’t bring your own) it is worth the visit.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten October 5, 2023
- CJBedfordshire, United Kingdom62 contributionsAmazing AcropolisYes the acropolis is a fabulous place but not for everyone. I’m 64 and I struggled in places as it’s uneven and slippery. It was so busy and hot when we visited….luckily I was on a tour which was very informative. There were lots of people pushing and shouting. I would say try to visit when there’s no cruise ships in. However I did manage to climb to the top and it is a spectacular view.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 6, 2023
- John MLurgan, United Kingdom2,308 contributionsAcropolis tour of the ancient worldThis is the best reason to visit Athens and the place is famous across the world. We decided to go for an early visit as they have started to have timed slots now due to the numbers of tourists who want to visit this historic site. We made our way to the top and spent an hour or two exploring the different temples and then made our way down the south slope to see the theatre of Dionysius and the various other sculptures on the way down It's an incredible place to experience and I'd recommend that you visitVisited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 6, 2023
- kfsvc78Springfield, Illinois114 contributionsMust see ancient ruinsOne of the most iconic ancient ruins of the world. Must see but be prepared of a lot of steep walking. Saw older gentleman fell. Please be careful. Expect crowd and we went on supposedly slow season. They can improve on their system a lot of people was cutting in-line like “families” a bit disorganized. If you can ignore people acting ignorant then just try to enjoy the place.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten October 7, 2023
- Diane OEncinitas, California87 contributionsNot impressed by the experience. Beautiful to see at night and from down below! As an art history major in college I can't believe I'm saying this: I enjoyed looking up at the Acropolis with the Parthenon from down below vs. crawling up steep grades with thousands of tourists to reach the summit. The Acropolis Museum is where the majority of the artifacts are stored and we thoroughly enjoyed that tour. The only thing I got out of the hike up was just bragging rights to say I did it. Could have taken a pass on that and just enjoyed it as the view from our hotel rooftop bar/restaurant! Also to be noted, there are thousands of tourists up there and scaling the mountain. The most people (hordes, really) that i've subjected myself to in decades.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 8, 2023
- Noelle C272 contributionsGreet the Morning at the AcropolisYou need to get here early!!! You may have seen the record crowds this past summer. They were not lying. We were here at the end of June and it was crazy. We opted to get there early as our hotel was close. One person in our party got in line for tickets (you cannot get early morning tickets online unless you have a tour) and someone else got in line for entry. Tour guides were buying tickets too, so make sure you don’t get behind one of those tour guides. This happened to me (she cut the line) and I had to wait while she ordered like 50 tickets. Getting in early also allows you to avoid the heat (especially in the summer). It’s much nicer in the morning and a tad less busy. After we left, we headed over to the Acropolis Museum.Visited June 2023Travelled with friendsWritten October 10, 2023
- Catherine Tsounis180 contributionsUnique experience from the Acropolis museum restaurantThe first place everyone wants to visit. This is the Parthenon and the Acropolis. The greatest monuments of western and eastern civilisation is located on this cliff. We had an evening view of the Parthenon from the Acropolis museum dining restaurant. The food was wonderful. A view, you will never forget.Visited July 2023Travelled with friendsWritten October 13, 2023

We visited in January 2020 and entered the site at opening. We were able to get in and visit the site with fewer than 20 people for the first hour. Nothing beats the sun rising over the city as seen from the Acropolis. I would recommend visiting the museum for a full understanding of the importance and history prior to visiting the Acropolis.

Visiting the Acropolis to see the Parthenon was the main reason we wanted to travel to Athens, it did not disappoint the views were amazing.
We booked a 1.5 hour group tour with Get Your Guide which was a huge disappointment, the information delivered by our guide was muddled and rushed. It would have been better to read from our guidebook as we saw the sights on the way to the top.
We visited Athens in March, the weather was great but more importantly the volume of people was much more manageable to see the sights without huge crowds.
The Acropolis was one of the highlights of our holiday to Athens but maybe think about exploring yourself or with a private guide.

We arrived shortly before opening to purchase tickets & were not surprised to see a line already formed. We utilized one of the side entrances though, so with only about 10 parties ahead of us, the line moved rather quickly. Once we entered & made our way around to the main entrance, we were met by hordes of people pushing their way up the steps. With our Rick Steves guide book in tow, we decided to take on the monument without a tour guide. (& I’m glad we went this route as being in a tour group just looked like a hassle.) We found it fairly easy to navigate around, & while there were informative plaques throughout, we opted for the descriptions in our book instead. The massive crane inside the main structure was an unfortunate eyesore, but I believe they are currently working on a preservation/restoration project. The views of the city were spectacular though. The ground was very uneven throughout & even slippery in some places, so be sure to wear appropriate shoes. I’d also recommend bringing water & patience as it warms up early in the morning & the number of clueless tourists is absurd.

Entrance is open from 8am. I highly recommend getting there then as it is a lot cooler and a lot less busier. Wear comfortable (ideally sports shoes) footwear as the ground is very rocky and take water. The exhibition takes about 90-120 mins to complete.
Buy the package ticket for €30 as this allows you to see 6 other sites across the city. If this is the only site you want to see then the cost is only €20.

We visited the Acropolis today. I was really apprehensive about the visit as we were going as a family with 2 young children who don't do well in the summer heat.
Read up a lot of reviews as wanted our experience to be the best it could be without a guide and decided an early morning visit would best suit us. We picked up the combi tickets of €30 per adult (the children went free as under 18 and British passports) the previous evening at Hadrian's library. No que which was brilliant.
Got to the Acropolis via the South eastern gate at 9am. Skipped the ticket ques(hurray!!). Walked through the entrance check barriers. Got up the hill and visited all the 8 structures within an hour and 10 minutes, with several little water breaks and several photos at each spot.
By the time We finished and got back down the sun was getting hotter and more people were flowing in.
The climb was easy and the break after each structure made it enjoyable for the children too.
Carry water, hats, sunblock and aim to get there early.

A few tips first. (1) Suggest you visit the Acropolis museum before visiting the Acropolis, to get a feel of the history of the ancient city. (2) Read up on the Acropolis online and download a map of the Acropolis on your mobile, before your visit. You don't need a tour guide. (3) if you are visiting Greece during summer like we did, keep in mind it is going to be very hot. Carry water and use sun cream. Proper walking shoes is a must since you have to climb stairs to reach the site. The climb is easy. No worries on that at all. (4) visit Acropolis in the evening, after 5.30 pm so that you can see the Parthenon lighted up. Also a good idea to escape the heat. (5) Buy a ticket online in advance, to beat the queue. Buy either a solo ticket or a combo ticket which covers Acropolis plus other historical sights of Athens
The visit to the Acropolis would take one and a half to two hours. Amazing to think how the Greek built a city on a hill, with such imposing structures with huge columns and beams, centuries ago

So worth every dollar, no matter what age. Here are some tips from my experience.
1. Download the Rick Steves Free Audio Tour of the Acropolis on your phone before heading to the site. This was a perfectly paced walk through the site and so informative. Rick Steve’s tours are far and away the best. There is supposedly wifi at the site, but it doesn’t work so don’t rely on that to stream.
3. Allow at least 20 minutes of walking time to just get to the ticket booth.
2. Either wake up REALLLLLY early and be in line to buy tix/enter the park at 8am EXACTLY, or go for the last two hours that the site is open. End of day is probably best because the site starts getting super crowded by 9am-9:30am.
3. Be mindful of if there are performances at the Acropolis that night, in case the regular hours are changed and the park closes early. My brother went when he thought he had two hours to explore, but ended up only getting 20 minutes for this reason.
4. Make sure you have ID so that you can receive a discounted ticket, if you qualify.
5. West shoes with grip…it’s slippery up there!
6. I would even recommend going alone or exploring somewhat alone to really take in the incredible nature of this site. I was really glad about this part of my visit.
Enjoy!

What an amazing part of history! I suggest really researching it before visiting to really appreciate it, otherwise you can always follow a tour guide. It is quite a walk up, so be prepared and wear comfortable shoes and take plenty of water. It makes a big difference if you go off season or early enough to beat the crowds.

We felt very privileged to be here when there really weren't many people due to the ongoing Covid situation. We visited early afternoon, which in any other year would have meant long queues and sharing the site with many other people. Instead, it felt pretty quiet, and you could really take your time over it. It was extremely hot, and there is not much shade at the top, so please bring a hat and a water bottle (there is a drinking fountain where you can refill). The scale of the whole site (not just the Parthenon) is very impressive and there is really detailed information boards through the place to tell you about the history. The views of the city is amazing too. If you plan to be in Athens for a few days, definitely get the €30 combo ticket which also gives you access to loads of other historical sites.

Looking at the acropolis from a distance you can see it’s significance towering over the city of Athens with the national flag blowing in the breeze. When you make the slightly sweaty climb to the top it’s worth every step. We bought our entrance tickets in advance from the Tiqets app for skip the queue, scanning and walking right through no problem. The acropolis area is epic with panoramic views of Athens. I would highly recommend downloading Ricks Steve’s audio Europe tour for free. This way we could walk around the various structures picking up some facts along the way. FYI the frozen lemonade as you head towards the exit may be 5 euros but helps to cool down before making a much easier decline back into the shaded streets of Athens. Enjoy your trip, it’s a must for taking in the city and Greek history.

I’d like to buy the combo ticket on the Hellenic Heritage website. I’d like to visit the Acropolis on the second day of my trip. Is this possible? The website asks you to choose a date and time for entry, and says the combo ticket is valid for 5 days afterwards. But what if I don’t want to visit the Acropolis on the first day?

What website is best to buy tickets? We're a group of 4 going on June 23rd and would like to go as late as possible in the day. I'm looking at 2 websites ... Hellenic Heritage (tickets not available for our date yet and looks like later entrance times compared to the other website) and Acropolis Tickets & Tours by Headout (available for purchase now - latest time is 5pm).
Any suggestions of where to buy the tickets? Also can't find what time it closes on June 23rd and the last possible entrance time.
Suggestions?

@Craig. Sorry but I am a professional guide for the Acropolis and the crowds are in the morning- NOT IN THE AFTERNOON.
PLEASE watch out for the HEADOUT. It’s a fraud. People cannot find the QR code in the tickets so they have to buy new ones. My advice is from the official Hellenic side or the best is to buy tickets at the cashier immediately.

Written March 31, 2024
Salve,
Noi abbiamo girato tutto a piedi. Spero di essere stata utile…

Does anyone know what time the acropolis opens on Tuesdays in September? Some websites say 8am. Others say on Tuesdays it doesnt open until 1pm, which seems unusual when it opens 8am the other days of the week. Can anyone advise? I plan on visiting on a Tuesday but dont want to get there for 7:30am if it doesnt open until 1pm. Thanks
Written March 10, 2024
I am pretty sure it opens at 08.00 every day apart from the few days a year that it is shut. It is only the closing time that varies and that is with the seasons (available daylight).
Would recommend getting there as early as possible as it gets very crowded. We went in mid September and it was packed by 10.00.
