Always crowded, with a mixture of mass tourism and local life, you can feel the soul of Athens here and do many different stuff from drinking a beer, learning about history of eating at a good restaurant!

On a recent trip to Greece, we stayed close to the Acropolis for a few days and were able to wander the Plaka. Once you get the lay of the land, it's really easy to get around on foot. Restaurants, tavernas, souvenir and gift shops are everywhere. You need to get past the "Gauntlet" area of restaurants opposite the subway... More

A very nice neighborhood for local food and drinks. When you climb up further you see more restaurants. Also some touristic shops are available

What a wonderful place to go for a meal or to while away some time shopping in this area just below the Acropolis. Many interesting restaurants, shops, art galleries - something for everyone. Worth a visit to one of the oldest areas of Athens with spectacular views up to the Acropolis.

Narrow streets and fun shops dominate the Plaka. Lovely place to grab a meal or do some shopping. Lots of jewelry, clothing and souvenir shops. Its an area of the city not to be missed.

Lots of small shops selling clothes ,souvenirs. You will need to check pricing before you buy . A good place to spend an evening walking around and then ending up in a eatery or pub .

A walk thru Plaka is an experience by itself... the cobbled streets, the shops selling souvenirs and the host of restaurants. We picked some interesting curios for friends and family... but you have to bargain... a lot!!

Streets are very narrow, you often have to give way to cars and motorists trying to get their way in. Lots of food, cafes and shopping along this district.

The plaka is the perfect spot for souvenir shopping, people watching, and grabbing a snack. Vendors are friendly, sometimes a little too friendly, but if you've got your haggle pants on, you could walk away spending 8 euros less than anticipated with a complementary magnet.

Thank Lisa M

Staying in Plaka

Neighbourhood Profile
Due to its proximity to the Acropolis, Plaka remains the area where the majority of foreign visitors stay and play. Its attractive features include small squares, some notable museums and the beautiful Mitropolis cathedral, as well as a host of places to stay, eat and drink. Its pedestrian zones make it a pleasant place to escape from the city’s notorious traffic. Adrianou and Kidathineon Streets contain a number of souvenir shops, offering classier items than you will find in the Flea Market. The most rewarding section to explore is the upper reaches towards the Acropolis itself, where many old stone houses with tiled roofs have survived. Up here you can find leafier corners and the odd quaint taverna with unobstructed views of the ancient rock.
