This is the market to visit for any and all kinds of fresh meat and fish. It is not for the faint of heart, if blood bothers you, you may want to avoid this place. Overall, though I have never seen such an expansive display of fresh offerings.

This place was cool!!! Tons of stuff to buy and random meat. You can see them butchering it. At the very end there is a restaurant. GO THERE. It is so good!!!! I can't remember the name.

A nice break from touring all the historical sites around Athens. This is a very busy city market, but the sights, smells, colors are well worth the visit. Place for great photography .

This place is crowded in the morning (try visiting early so you get the fresh fish), but late in the night you can find some really nice plates served, in the taverns located within the market. Mainly for meet though.

Central Market has fresh produce, meats, fish, coffee, olives, sweets, spices, souvenirs and many more items. Wow seeing the butchers in white coats trimming and getting cuts ready for the customers was outstanding to see. Walking through the market itself was just phenomenal.

On our way to Monastiraki we called into the central market, a hub bub of noise and smells.Initially we walked through the meat market, I don't think that I have ever seen so many pork chops in one place !! Then as you wander around, you come across the fish market and stalls selling every type of Greek delicacy. If... More

Large city market with numerous stalls and vendors offering fresh produce, meats, coffee, olives, sweets, dry items...souvenirs, housewares, etc. Many prepared food items to enjoy, so try something different like souvlaki, dolmades or saganaki...yummy!

We love wandering through markets when we travel and this one was a great one! There are various areas of the market (a building with fish, meat, produce, etc). The vendors call out to you. The food is fresh and you get to see a lot of unrecognizable things. The fruits and veggies are gorgeous to look at.. and the... More

It is a meat ,fish, green and other goods Market . Many Athenians make their weekly shops fanatically. If you don't have specific shop to buy meat or fish, be very careful of the quality especially if you gone to buy big fish .Inside the market there are 2 or 3 taverns providing cheap and fresh food . Also near... More

It's a sheltered meat market, not that you would buy anything as a tourist but see what the local people buy for their meals. The streets around the market there are all kinds of shops you can get anything for your daily needs. There are also shops you can buy local sweets and olives to bring back home. The market... More

Staying in Omonia

Neighbourhood Profile
Omonia
Omonia Square is as plain in appearance as Syntagma is grand. Surrounded largely by functional blocks from the 1950s and 60s and no longer boasting its underground stalls, the square is now mostly frequented by immigrants and bargain shoppers. The most rewarding area to explore is to the south. Set off down Athinas Street, with the Acropolis gradually coming into focus in the distance, and you will get a sense of old commercial Athens, especially at the picturesque meat, fish and vegetable markets some way beyond the City Hall. The blocks to the west of Athinas are home to many Chinese and South Asian traders, adding a multicultural atmosphere to what was until the late 1990s a very homogenous society.
