We were looking for casual eating place with fresh ingredients, but didn’t find it in this market. Yes, it’s massive, unless you are interested to look at fresh cut meat, seafood, etc... It’s not for you. It’s also not very tidy and smells pretty bad in hot weather.

We were on a cruise ship and decided to take a walk in to town and we came across this market. It was very loud but buzzing, everyone trying to out sell others, the fish, the meat and also garlic. Some very poor people here too trying to see a few bits. Big butchers blocks where they chop up the... More

As we often do in a new city, my wife and I walked to the Central Market of Athens. Most cities outside of the U.S., Nd some inside the U.S. have one. They are terrific ways to begin to learn a culture by seeing what people eat and how it is prepared. The Athen's market displays wondrous fresh meats, fish,... More

Great go on a first thing in the morning. Lots of fruit and veg, fish and meat. A little stinky but worth it! In same area.

I've been to Greece about 10 times and after seeing Athens and all the well known sites & museums, it's now just a stop-over for me... I get in one day before my plane leaves and walk the PLAKA area to Syntagma Square and Ermou St to seeing the shops & sites. But MOST of all, I try to walk... More

Have to confess that I would take a food market over a pile of stones every time and this did not disappoint. If you are at all squeamish/don't want to acknowledge where food comes from, this is not the place to go. Red in tooth in claw is an apt description of the fish and meat areas. In a more... More

Perfect place for shopping - even if you go there out of curiosity, just to see how the market place looks in Greece, you'll be tempted by many things - herbs, feta cheese, olives, natural fragrances, soaps, meat and fishes, fruits or something else - everything is cheap, fresh and delicious - even if you are a bit disgusted by... A massive fish market and walk through to the meat market. The bustling business and the noise created a fantastic and unique atmosphere. I can see how some reviewers might feel intimidated but I stopped to ask questions of a few vendors while taking pictures and had nothing but positive vibes. Afraid I got carried away with the pics. Eat... More

An incredible market where you can buy the freshest fish, meat to fruit. Market lovers can not miss it. should be eaten in small taverns in the market .... I recommend to everyone.

Staying in Omonia

Neighbourhood Profile
Omonia
Omonia Square is as plain in appearance as Syntagma is grand. Surrounded largely by functional blocks from the 1950s and 60s and no longer boasting its underground stalls, the square is now mostly frequented by immigrants and bargain shoppers. The most rewarding area to explore is to the south. Set off down Athinas Street, with the Acropolis gradually coming into focus in the distance, and you will get a sense of old commercial Athens, especially at the picturesque meat, fish and vegetable markets some way beyond the City Hall. The blocks to the west of Athinas are home to many Chinese and South Asian traders, adding a multicultural atmosphere to what was until the late 1990s a very homogenous society.
