We took the boat from Elounda to Spinalonga which takes about half an hour. Spinalonga is an interesting island steeped in history. It takes about an hour to walk around. You can have a guide but we didn't as there are information boards around the ruins. Good footwear is recommended, don't forget your camera.

We where in holiday in Agios Nikolaos. We take in the morning the citybus to Plaka (a nice smal village). There we take the boat to Spinalonga (not a long trip and the cheapest way to visit this lepra colony: 8 euro). We visit the island with a guide. Very interesting and also a smal sunny place. Around noon we... More

Spinalonga is an amazingly evocative place. The island has been occupied since the stone age by every race in the Mediterranean. The visible castle is Venetian and Turkish. From 1903 to 1957 it was a leper colony, one of the last in Europe. Many of the domestic buildings of this period are in ruins, though a few have been restored. A walkway... More

Just a few minutes boat trip from Elounda this island that used to be a leper colony until the 1950s is set amongst stunning scenery. Well worth the visit and get the feeling of what life must have been like shut away on the island

This atmospheric island is a must for anyone staying in Elounda. The boat trip across is delightful and the island itself is a revelation. To see a deserted village where the lepers lived brings home to you how awful it must have been to be exiled as they were. Take note of the ancient Venetian architecture.

We walked into elounda and caught one of the boats to Spinalonga. It was 10 euros pp for the boat and 8euros on arrival. The boat returns in an hour however there are boats every 30mins or so and you can get on any one of them, meaning you can stay for as long as you like. Readers of 'The... More

If you don't visit any other historical site whilst on Crete you simply must not miss this one. From the minute you step into the small ferry at Plaka you cannot fail to be captivated by the island's magic and tragedy (a leper colony less than 75 years ago) Ancient fort affords amazing views. If rocks could talk - the... More
