A trip to Spinalonga Island is a must when visiting this part of Crete. It was so interesting and the boat rides to and from the island give you a great view of the coastline. I would recommend going early in the morning when it's not so hot

Very interesting island to visit with its history as a fort and then a leper colony. Take the short boat journey from Plaka to the island and have a nice leisurely stroll around the streets. Try and go early in the day as the heat can be extreme. Bring water and some head wear to keep the sun off. You... More

We used the 10 euro boat service out of Elounda and then paid 8 euro to visit the island. The boat trip was good travelling directly to the island, but taking us completely around on the return trip. We chose to avoid 'guidance' and barbecues preferring to amble around on our own for the allotted hour or so that the... More

This is a must visit island, a lesson in human frailties, ancient feuds blend with modern history in shaping this interesting fortified island village. The island has been sympathetically restored to allow thousands of people to scratch the surface of an old culture and of course the fact that it was also a more modern Leper Colony is of great... As I had never been to Crete, I decided to do a bit of sightseeing.....I was reading the book " The Island" and just had to visit. I booked through Thomas Cook, and the price was very reasonable. 39 Euros, and for that you went to the Island NOTE ( you have to pay 10 euros to the tour guide... More

Despite a fairly long drive from Plakias to Elounda, our trip to Spinalonga will always remain one of our family's Cretan highlights. A truly fascinating day out and we will definitely return in future years. Visitors to Crete should make this trip a priority on any itinerary!

SO very interesting. Had no idea how people lived on the island. Before I went I should have done more research. It was amazing to learn the people built a city. Met, fell in love and married. Had children there as well.

The last leper Island just off mainland Crete from Elounda. We took a bus from Heralikion to Elounda and then a boat ride to the Island. A must see considering the history behind the island.

Went over on boat from Plaka only took about 15 mins, return 8 euros each then 8 euros each to go around .Basically a lot of old ruins of the buildings that used to be .Quite steep and a lot of walking so not suitable for anyone with mobility problems. Avoid very hot days as not a lot of shade and... More
