Hiking Trail Fira - Oia
Hiking Trail Fira - Oia

About
This scenic hike connecting the postcard-perfect Greek villages, Fira and Oia, is one of the best ways to take in the beauty of Santorini. The island trail brings you along the caldera and Aegean sea, and through other quieter but picturesque towns of Firostefani and Imerovigli. The hike is about six miles and will take you between two to five hours depending on your speed. The trail is not marked and consists of cobbled, paved and dirt paths with slight elevation. Wear sturdy shoes, and start your expedition early so you can end at Oia in time for lunch. – Tripadvisor

A little challenging but worth it
The hike from Fira to Oia was my favorite thing we did in Greece. It can be challenging, not so much because of the terrain, but rather because it is long and there is not much shade. We hiked toward Oia so we could see the sunset. Note: When you descend into Oia and feel excited to complete the hike, you still have to walk at least an hour if you want to go to the far end to see the sunset.

    Definitely worth the effort
The views are spectacular and it's free. You'll come across all of the most photographed areas of Fira and Oia. You'll walk through some of the main streets and also some fairly remote areas where the footpaths, although clearly marked, consists of rocks and stones so you will need good comfortable software. Once there you can get the bus back to Fira for around 1.60 and they seem to put on an additional last bus so that they have capacity to take everyone back.

    Must Do Hike
This will be one of the best things you will ever do. The scenary is unbelieveable. It will take you about 4 hours from Fira to Oia. This seems to be the most well marked trail and I sense the easier direction. I would definitely recommend some form of hiking shoes or very good walking shoes, no sandles/flip flops thats for sure. I'd say 1/3 of it is not paved walkway but loose dirt and rocks. There are no bathrooms along the way and only a few stands where locals may sell drinks/snacks. There are some resorts if they are nice enough, they might let you in for a W.C. break. Lastly, we did this in mild weather. I can't imagine trying to do this in middle of summer.

    A must do!
Perfect walk on a perfect day. Not overly hot and stunning views from Fira till arrival in Oia. Not a bad idea to carry some water as this trip will take the better part of 3 hours.

    Must do hike!
This was probably the highlight of our time in Santorini. It was a great hike. Take your time & enjoy the scenery & wonderful views. Plenty of photo opportunities. Take lots of water, wear a sun hat, sun cream & good shoes. We are in our 60’s, reasonably fit & managed the hike with energy enough to explore Oia when we got there! We loved it!

    Well worth the hike
This took us around 2hrs 40 mins . We really enjoyed this. Wear good sturdy shoes as the paths are hard and rocky, take water and enjoy the scenery, it will all be worth it when you reach Oia. We headed for a cool drink and bite to eat when we arrived then we were ready to explore Oia. We got the bus back to Fira which cost 1 euro 60 each. Recommend.

    Spectacular views must do
We did this walk on a cooler day, the views were spectacular and breathtaking we couldn’t stop taking photos it is so pretty. We were advised not to wear sandals and glad we wore trainers as some uneven terrain. When we got nearer to Oia we rode donkeys for part of the trail for 10 euros each. It’s a long walk but absolutely worth it for the scenery a must do.

    Scenic Hike
This walk is probably one of the most scenic hikes you could ever make. The views are beautiful! Our hotel told us it was an “easy” hike. While it is not Kilimanjaro, it does require the right clothing, shoes, and some water. It’s a not a leisurely stroll in your cutest dress to take pics in Oia.

    Worth the effort!
This was the best thing we did on our trip to Santorini. I would echo what others have said regarding footwear needing to be at least a trainer type shoe. Take plenty of water and start out earlier if it’s summer time as it gets really hot heading towards midday-early afternoon. The trail allows you to see the west coast of Santorini from almost every angle allowing for excellent photo opportunities. A must do while visiting Santorini!

    Oh my what a walk
Really really good walk from fira. Can be quite challenging if you go all the way. You had out of busy fira passing a few nice smaller resorts. The further you good the more quieter it gets. Their is places to stop and eat but expensive. Theirs also numerous churches viewpoints and great views. Take good footwear and plenty of water. You make your way all the way around the caldera with spectacular views. Really worth doing.

We started this hike around 10am and had perfect weather luckily.
It takes about 4 hours with a few breaks here and there.
There are a few steep climbs and areas of unstable loose rocks towards the Oia side. But otherwise a great hike. When you finally see Oia in the distance in makes all the kms worth it.
Take lots of water and snacks.

We started the walk from Fira early in the morning on our last day in Santorini. It is true what the reviews say to bring good shoes and water with you. We also found it important to keep an eye on our walking path as the condition can change with missing stones, uneven ground and holes for drainage. When we went in March a few members of our family started with sweaters and windbreakers but got too warm once we started moving.

If you walk straight through at a good pace it should take about 2.5 hours to complete the 10 km walk but you'll likely want to stop for photos along the way and take a lot more time doing the trail. There are quite a few churches that have good vantage points to see the sea and land below. One of our favourite spots to hang out on the island is Skaros Rock (which is also a good spot for a sunset) and that is on the trail as well. If you get tired along the way there are bus stations that you can scan QR codes at and call busses to for pickup but we weren't sure if they were running regularly in March.

After Fira there are no public washrooms until you get to Oia as far as we could tell but there are cafes around the route. When we went in March there were lots of hotels under construction and doing repairs for the summer season so quite a few were not open when we went. After Imerovigli there isn't much in terms of shops and places to stop but the walk is still very enjoyable. We saw lots of lizards and cats along the way which we enjoyed seeing too.

We had visited Oia the day before our last morning in Santorini so we only went about halfway before we had turned back. Oia is a nice town as well and would be well worth the hike but it can get a little crowded in the afternoon and especially around sunset so plan accordingly.

Exposure is a big thing here and in some spots along the route there can be car traffic, high winds and no shade. We didn't feel unsafe at any point in the hike and feel this is a must do activity if you are able to in Santorini.

I agree with so many of the reviewers - this hike was 5 stars! One of the highlights from my two week European vacation. I did it as a solo female in November and felt safe. The trail was well marked and I ran into people along the way (although it was never crowded). The views were epic. There were a few harder parts but nothing crazy (a few steep hills and rocky areas). I wore comfortable jeans and sturdy sneakers. Tips: wear layers (the temps fluctuated especially when I was exposed to the wind), bring water and snacks, and stop and enjoy the views!

This was on the top of my list of to dos. I am 67 and I made it. There were lots of places to rest. The views were amazing. There were a few places that were harder but not orthopedic turning back. And I might add I’m not really a hiker.

If you go to Santorini - you MUST do this hike!

Absolutely stunning views the whole way. We stayed in Imerovigli and the trail was right outside our resort.

It was mostly downhill, but still long, and worth starting as early in the morning as possible.

To end in Oia was absolutely amazing. Our biggest regret was not allowing enough time to go back home and change because we would have enjoyed a lot more being dressed up. (Felt silly being in such a gorgeous town in our sweaty hiking clothes.)

Other tips: Start early in the day & Definitely Google "Fira to Oia Hike" and watch the famous youtube video with tips of turns to avoid beforehand. (A wrong turn could add a mile or two to your hike.)

Great hike, but not super-well marked, so we ended up walking along a highway with a very small shoulder. Fortunately it wasn't very busy, but it was still a bit scary. We ended up going 8 miles instead of 6

Great family hike, however, true to its rustic nature, you best bring all your essentials such as wearing sunblock (even in the off season), water, bug spray, a hat/shades and any other items you may normally carry when you hike. Paths are uneven and some spots are incredibly slippery but unexpectedly so as the terrain changes from one step to another. Views are great, but you literally feel like if anything happens, you are definitely ‘on your own’. I carried an extra battery charging pack for my phone just in case. I’d been taking so many photos and videos of my trip that my phone kept dying so having an extra power charger for my phone was just what I needed for a hike of that caliber.

Nothing can truly prepare you for this walk. I walked it the day after my 70th birthday. I am in moderate fitness condition. My husband is in excellent condition. It was hard but we did it including the detour out to Skoros Rock. The views were amazing. I have no regrets and I definitely did a lot of self talk simply knowing it was one foot in front of another. I will never forget this day. Ended with a great lunch. We were fortunate enough to have a breezy not to hot day. We Ubered down then walked down the 588 steps to the ship. 33,000 steps.

Only attempted the hike from Fira to Imerovigli. The trail officially starts at Atlantis Hotel, close to the Holy Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of Thira. With the amazingly stunning caldera view on your left, keep walking ahead. There are steps involved, so be mindful of that. I think for me, the area leading up to the cable car viewpoint was the steepest in the section of the hike that I attempted. Along the route, you will see some amazing sights as well, not just vistas of the caldera, Thira and Imerovegli, but some scenic viewpoints like the Three Bells as well. Do try attempting this walk near sunset hours, the views are simply amazing, and it is easy to understand why sunsets are famous in Santorini! For this section of the trail, it is easy to find shade and water, so fret not.

We walked the Fira to Oia trail from Imerovigli toward Oia one morning in September and found it to be stunning. There is a small section of road walking just north of Imerovigli and then the trail picks up again along the caldera. Another morning we hiked toward Imerovigli from the north side and took the lower path along the Aegean Sea at the start along the stone wall. Going this way was easier than around the other side, which was steeper with loose stone. In either direction, the hike was a highlight of our Santorini trip and offered unique geography along the caldera from any hike we have taken in our travels. Seeing the churches, caldera & water views, and resorts along the way was spectacular. (We did not do the Imerovigli to Fira segment due to our travel schedule). As other reviewers have mentioned, wear sturdy shoes and bring water. Being mindful of wind & rain/storm forecasts is also a good idea. Highly recommended experience.
