- laczkozsuDebrecen, Hungary2,282 contributionsA world-famous volcanoSantorini island is one of the most exquisite volcanic landscapes in the world. It’s the most beautiful island I have ever been. We saw the iconic caldera and, in the middle, the volcanic islands of Palea and Nea Cameni from Fira, Firostefani and Oia. On a boat trip we visited the National Geological Park of Nea Kameni and explored the points of interest: Mikri Kameni crater (1570/1573), Daphne crater (1925-1928), Georgios crater (1866), Liatsikas lava –Youngest land of Greece (1950) Summit of Nea Kameri (127m) – Georgious lava dome (1866-1870). It was a special trip, but we were very tired at the end. I recommend it.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten August 2, 2024
- ElaGlasgow, United Kingdom69 contributionsPanoramic view of the whole islandThe caldera is one of the most talked about parts of Santorini, visiting for us was an essential part of our trip. I strongly recommend visiting with a guided tour as hearing about the history and geology enhances the experience dramatically. Our entrance fee was included with our boat tour but if visiting independently there is a charge of €5 paid in cash. There is a short hike (no more than 35 mins). The terrain is very stoney the full way up, we noticed people in flip flops and heeled sandals struggling. The walk is not that steep and doesn’t require a lot of grip; Anything with a hard sole should be fine. At the very top there is a panoramic view of every island that makes up Santorini. I am glad we included this tour in our trip.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten August 17, 2024
- themarkyofbathBath, United Kingdom48 contributionsDANGER! Not for kids, don't do it!Santorini is a beautiful romantic island in the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea. Absolutely one of the most amazing locations for couples seeking romance and a very stunning location. Do not under any circumstances bring your children here. We did see a few misguided adults drag their kids here and in virtually every single case they were all crying or complaining. The Santorini experience for children appears to be one of upset. I can see why, as there is literally nothing to appeal to them. Beaches are awash with sunbeds for couples, the whole tourist trade is set up for either romantic couples or adults who want to take in the stunning scenery. The many hundreds of steps and sheer drops are no place for children. It is a trip of a lifetime and one of the most beautiful places I have been. Go as a couple, enjoy the sunsets and the views, the boat trips and the beaches. Learn about the volcano, it is a fascinating Volcano with an amazing history and can be seen in detail in boat trips and museums.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten September 12, 2024

We arrived on a boat trip from the old port. You pay €5 to enter then it’s a long steep 20 min walk up and up and up. You need trainers on. People in flip
Flops were turning back. And of course it was very hot in sun with no shade.
When you get the top- a great view but no volcano to see. Just rocks. Some people said they saw steam- we just saw rocks.
We are both fit and it was a tough walk.take water and a hat and don’t take young kids.

Save your money. We went with Santorini Travel and it was chaos. Took a longer than it should have, loads of waiting in the sun, mix up with buses so we were all divided up and put on old mini buses. To walk on the volcanic island was and extra €5

We were staying at Imerovigl from where we had an excellent view of the caldera. We took a tour by boat to the volcano island. The best part was the boat ride through the blue waters of the Aegean sea. Some of the views were as if from picture post cards. We docked at the volcano island made of black rocks and our tour guide took the people on a hike of the volcano. A handful of us chose to stay back on the boat and enjoy the breeze and the scenery. It was a morning well spent.

The views from this volcano are stunning. The walk up isn’t very long, but we found it quite difficult as we aren’t used to heat. The inactive crater isn’t very far from the bottom though, so if you struggle with mobility you can walk to this and sit down under covered seating as opposed to going the whole way up. The walk is also relatively safe and suitable for accompanied children. You’re given an explanatory leaflet as you enter the site which gives a great context as to the history of the volcano even if you aren’t with a guide. It’s only a short 10 minute boat ride from the Port of Thira. We really enjoyed our trip!

To do absolutely Go down to the port of Fira on foot (provide sneakers), on the back of a donkey or by cable car. Climb aboard this magnificent wooden boat and set off to discover the volcano. It's really a nice excursion with a very friendly guide (Ulysse) who explains the history of the volcano really well and who is very available for any information. I recommend 100%

Great trip out to the volcano and hot springs. This tour was the perfect length of time. Allowed adequate time to hike the volcano and take in the views, before heading back to the boat to go round to the hot springs. Definitely wear dark coloured swim wear for the hot springs, as light coloured clothing will be dyed. You could either jump in, or climb down the steps into the sea, before swimming over to the hot springs which were lovely and warm.
There were some issues at the port. We arrived on time, but there were others who arrived late and even after leaving the port we returned for them - very kind, but frustrating! Though, overall this didn’t affect our experience.

I jogged from the boat dock to the top, then around the rim. I had to cross back and forth multiple times before descending back to the boat dock to finish a 5K distance. The ground at the top is active, and has smoke seeping through the rocks. It's warm to the touch but not hot enough to burn your skin or shoes. Very cool if you like that sort of site. Definitely wear comfortable CLOSED TOE shoes! Leave the flip flops behind. The trail to the top isn't difficult, but it's not completely smooth.

I loved exploring the Santorini Volcano. It was my first time at a volcano and didn't really know what to expect. But it's a little otherworldly, almost like being on Mars. It's pretty cool to see the steam coming up from the rocks too. Note: It is quite a hike up to the volcano. It's a LOT of walking. Wear comfortable shoes.

Is there a way to have extra time to hike the volcano? We’re ok with skipping the Hot Springs

Hi,
We would love to find an afternoon trip to hike to the volcano with a small group. Does anyone know of a boat that will do this? Don't want to be on a boat with 100 others! Thanks so much

Hi, we would be visiting santorini in september on cruise ship between 14:30-20:00. Could anyone suggest some itinerary for sight seeing including must see stops, mode of transport and any shore excursions covering the same. Thanks
Written August 18, 2018
Hi
There are many options. There are cars to rent, scooters, atv or bicycles. You can use public buses. You can get private driver who can drive you around. You can do tour of island by organized bus tour.
Things to see. Fira(shopping through tiny streets and walk ways restaurants etc .... capital city), Oia(sunset),Perissa or Perivolos(black beach and restaurants, church “Santa irini”), Pyrgo(walk through tiny walkways homes churches shops up to castle ruins on top of mountain) Akrotiri excavation is really amazing to see. (Red beach is a walk from there), volcano and Hot springs by boat. Vineyards.
Probably your cruise ship will offer excursions.
Have fun
You will enjoy the island.

Is the footing and walking terrain, in the town of Ferra, easy for someone with a disability?
Written May 20, 2018
No- it is not. There are lots of steps with no access for disables. You might have to rent a car- however, their bus service is pretty good and cheap.

Hola patri_vitoria,

Viel Spass!
