Stayed in this stunningly beautiful village with our family of 9. The courtyard in the centre of town has charming restaurants and shops. The highlight was an accidental visit to Kastelli Winery on the hill overlooking the town. While on a walk I spoke to a man working at the entry gate of the winery. After chatting for a few minutes about the winery it became apparent the gentleman was the owner. He was kind enough to invite to walk around the winery showing me the vines and telling me the history of the winery. Although the new tasting room wasn’t quite ready to open he invited me in for a tasting. The tasting room was fabulous and so was the wine. It was my privilege to be the first person to taste his wine in the new tasting room. He invited me and my wife back to the winery that evening to meet his wife and enjoy a glass of wine with a beautiful sunset view over the village. Wonderful people and excellent wine in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. If you go I hope you get to meet the owner of the winery.

Nice little village. The Best was to visit Alisachni art gallery (beautiful art at a very good price). Natassa the artist and Eleni took time with us to tell us about the artworks of different great artists, including Natassa. We also visited 2 other art galleries, one with wood artworks owned by Michael. Great moment and unexpected expenses ;)

This town was such a surprise. Our hotel and guide both told us to walk there but they "underplayed" how nice this town was!! This town was a highlight of our time in Santorini even on a cloudy day with "tornadic winds." The stores were interesting and not quite as touristy as other towns. Highly recommend.

Walking through Megalochori was beautiful and peaceful. The winding streets and stunning views that constantly change are the highlight of this old town area. We ended up passing through parts of Megalochori a few times but getting out and walking the town is a whole different story. At the time we were there we didn’t see any open restaurants or businesses so I’m glad we stayed in Imerovigli. It’s just a short drive to see other towns. From Megalochori we also visited Emporeio and enjoyed the view of the windmills.

Great place, winding alleys, very good parking. In the village nice bars and pubs, Frapee for 3,50€ absolute rarity on Santorini. Were there several times at different times of the day. Worth a trip and you have absolute peace compared to the main towns and get a little insight into the traditional construction of the places.

Stayed at Caldera Dolphin Suites in May. Absolutely beautiful setting. Excellent accommodation. Staff are some of the best we have met on holiday. Everyone was very helpful, friendly and kind. Everyone went above and beyond to make our stay special. We celebrated our Wedding Anniversary while we was there and was greeted by a bottle of wine and plate of lovely fruit in our room. Breakfast was excellent. Lovely sunsets. I cannot say enough about this beautiful place & people. Don’t hesitate to visit, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed!
Just would like to thank everyone there for making our stay so special.

We went right around the Island and this was our favourite place.A lovely little village full of charm. There is even a natural cave where the temperature is cool in Summer and warm in Winter. Not so many tourists either here as the coaches etc do not stop here. Well worth a visit.

Simply too many cruise ships that saturated the narrow streets. Santorini was incredibly expensive to the point we felt “ripped” off even having a latte. We stayed in a cave house in Megalochori and the bus star took us on an adventure everyday. Although geographically stunning, we will not be back.

When in Santorini, you must visit the village of Megalochori, located on the eastern shore of the Santorini caldera, about 6 km south of the capital of the island - Fira. Despite the rapid development of tourism on the island, the village has managed to retain its unique Cycladic character. Megalochori is a maze of winding streets, whitewashed Cycladic houses and churches with blue domes and ornate bell towers. The village is the center of Santorini's wine industry and is surrounded by many vineyards. It is a place where you can get to know the rich wine-making tradition of the island "from the inside" by walking among the vineyards, where the vines are arranged in characteristic "baskets". In the center of the village there is a square with taverns and a small park, next to which stands probably the most famous church of Megalochori - Panagia ton Eisodion (church of the Blessed Virgin Mary) with a characteristic bell tower, at the base of which is a gate through which the street passes.

Megalochori was a fantastic location for us . Quiet village with a small square where the best restaurants were Raki (tomatoe balls a favourite ) and Marmita The accommodation and overall service from Ducato was outstanding. The accommodation at villa Lo , an old school was absolutely superb . . Then we moved to Mansion 1878 , which was equally stunning , based in an old winery . In Megalochori, we hired a car for 3 days - cheapest ever at 30 euros and didn’t even need a credit card. We were also about five minutes from the most stunning. Views ever , on our last night we walked 5 minutes from the hotel and sat and watched the sunset with a glass of beer - the sunsets in Santorini are simply the best . We drove to Oia and watched the sunset , had a day And night in Fira Walking down the steps to the old port and then getting the cable car back up , went on a semi private Catomaran to red beach , white beach , the volcano island and had. Brilliant bbq , walked to pyrgos (worth finding the back path as per Julia Bradbury programme ) through the vineyards where we had a drink at the rosemary bar , and then Mezzi at Franco s watching the sunset , we went to the beach at Perrisa and then ate at Popeyes, and we loved going to Amoundi Bay , stunning location , with a walk just around the corner where you can watch or participate in cliff diving -the beauty of Santorini is quite simply stunning.

Hi
My family and I are visiting in one weeks time. We want to watch the rugby league challenge cup final on Saturday 24th August. It’s on BBC one in England. Does anyone know of a bar in Megalochori which will be showing this??
Thanks
Jim

Hi, we would be visiting santorini in september on cruise ship between 14:30-20:00. Could anyone suggest some itinerary for sight seeing including must see stops, mode of transport and any shore excursions covering the same. Thanks

I don’t think that time will allow an Oia sunset I’m afraid. The length of time you are in santorini will not allow you to see and do everything that’s well worth seeing and doing. I can make some suggestions if you want to pick what is more tailored to your interests.
Fira has lots of shops restaurants and some museums. This is most likely where your boat will dock so won’t really involve transport other than a donkey or cable car up from the port.
If you would prefer a beach personally I would travel to Kamari over Perissa. You could go by bus from Fira or a taxi would be approximately 25 Euro. There is a lovely prom with lots of nice restaurants as well as the beach. It’s also close to the ancient ruins of Thera. There’s a beautiful outdoor cinema but again I think you will be leaving too early for that.
If you would like a walk you could get a taxi from Fira to nearby Firostefani and walk back which is a lovely walk, quite easy and with stunning caldera views.
Oia is stunning you could get a bus or taxi. I think a taxi could be a little bit expensive.
Santo winery would be lovely too if you wanted to get a taxi out there, have some wine and nibbles and enjoy the stunning views.
Hope these suggestions help.

Hi - my wife and I are on Santorini for 4 nights next June and I'm interested in getting out of the main tourist centres as well. How did you get to places like Megalochori? Any other places you would recommend as well? I looked into doing a private tour (5 hours) but for the two of us it would have been 350 Euros and with the exchange rate for the Australian dollar it comes out quite expensive. Did you use the buses on Santorini?

Hi, I have used the tour - Full day sight seeing at Santorini from viator. You may have a look into the details. It costed me 43 euros last July'2016. The tour is very well organized and compact tour covering lots of major places in Santorini in a luxury bus - cost effective too and the village walk was one of them.

Staying in Oia. How do I get to Megalochori by public transport please?
Written October 29, 2015
You have to take a bus to Fira first. Then, take the bus from Fira in direction to Perissa and ask the driver to stop you at Magalochori. Do have a copy of timetable of bus times and itineraries.
