The Karababa Castle perched on the hill in Khalkis (in mainland Greece part of town) just before crossing to Euboea, is its best attraction. Add to that it is totally free and you can reach it by car up to the entrance door with free...More

Most of the castle walls are still intact, and there is a good museum at the top of the castle walls. Both open free of charge, but note that the castle is closed on Mondays. Just below the castle there is a cafe with a...More

The path leading up to the Fortress is surrounded by Pines and large cacti. Better to attempt this climb in the morning and avoid the hotter afternoons in Summer. The museum in the castle is open from 8.00am to 3pm and is free. It contains...More

The Karababa Castle provides lovely view of the city from on top of old walls, but that is not all it has to offer. In decent shape, the walls of this old fortress remind you that Greece's history is long and full of battles.

Approached from the mainland side up steps through pines. Well preserved castle with an interesting & well presented museum of Greek and ottoman artefacts. Spend an hour here happily browsing; then wander down to the unrelated but proximal cafe bar just below.

The museum exhibit columns, engraved marble + stones, graves and many more. Which gives you a good view of Chalcidis' history. A must do!
