Passage through Sparta to see the statue of Leonidas which measures 3 meters. It is located in front of the Sparta stadium to symbolize the spirit of the games. Everything is located in the middle of an urban area, which makes it less attractive to me.

This is a monumental statue to King Leonidas bearing helmet, sword and shield with Gorgon head on, with inscription ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ. Gorgon head refers to the wife of Leonidas, her name was Gorgo.
Statue is situated in front of city stadium, right below the ancient Acropolis and Theatre of Ancient Sparta, it dates from 1968.
On the place of his death during the Battle of Thermopylae, stands another monument from 1955 to King Leonidas, bearing helmet, spear and shield with an Gorgon head on. A sign under the statue reads also ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ" ("Come and get it")

As someone else has already said, how do you score a statue? It’s a nice statue and photo opportunity at the end of the main street in Sparta, in front of the football stadium. The history is what makes the statue : Leonidas was a Spartan hero and king, who fought, and was killed, in the last stand against the Persians at the battle of Thermopylae in 480BC - the inscription below the statue “ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ” means “Come and take them”, which was Leonidas’ response to the Persian leader Xerxes when he offered to spare the Spartans’ lives if they laid down their arms and surrendered. Good man.

The name Sparta conjures up strong historic images, yet when you get there, there's really nothing much to back that up. The biggest attraction, Mystras, dates back some 1,500 years after the famous battle that created the heroic story of Leonidas.
So, I guess it is an important recognition for this statue to be here at the end of the Main Street - and the least the city can do.
I had previously seen his statue on the site of the Battle of Thermopylae and I'm not sure which one depicts him most historically correct.
Large parts of the main street in Sparta are rather drab and the area where the statue stands is no exception. I wouldn't go out of my way to walk there, but if you're walking/driving past . . .

This was a disappointment because the city is historically very important and there are only many cafes, bars, food and a monument at the beginning of the city. The working hours of the store is terrible. Nothing works until 17:00, and on Wednesday I think even longer. Just a short pause, taking pictures at the monument and back on the road.

To me it was a just a statue, if you are in Sparta you might as well pop and see it! HOWEVER my partner (allegedly an adult) revisited his childhood and happily posed with one of his heroes the great king Leonidas - I'm sure he imagined he was one of the 300 spartans

You cannot miss the giant bronze statue of Leonidas, hero of ancient Sparta, which is located near the stadium, half way between the city centre and the ancient theatre. Just a quick stop.

Not going to lie, the magnitude of this statue was probably greater for us, because we were here for the Spartan Race Trifecta World Championship 2019. The finish line was right in front of the statue and there’s nothing more rewarding than to finish the journey at the feet of the legendary leader after running 15+ miles over cobblestone, up through the mountains, down through the olive and orange trees, and across the river, climbing ropes, swinging from bars, balancing on beams, and carrying heavy stones. AROO!

It is completely not understood why Sparta, a city with such an important historical value does not care of its heritage. Basically this statue is the only sign, that Sparta has something from the past. The statue itself is not bad, but the face and eyes of Leonidas a little bit weird...

Not necessarily a MUST see. I was excited to visit the town of Sparta but was disappointed a bit. The statue was nice but he had really weird eyes. Ha! Weird observation, I know. It was cool to be able to check the box and go there. I enjoyed the shields on the fence around the field. Very cool.

Qualcuno sa dirmi cosa c'é scritto oltre a "Molon Labe" sulla base della statua? Grazie in anticipo

what are the best places to view the race?
Written September 3, 2017
The best place to see the finish of Spartathlon is under the statue and near the statue of Leonidas. The first athlete finishes about 6 in the morning and the last one about 7 in the afternoon. during the whole day many events are happening. it's a great experience because the place is so crowded and full of colors, flags and athletes from all over the world and also Spartan citizens. Trust my opinion I'm a citizen living near there!!!
