We actually found this Cemetery (Assistens Kirkegård) by accident as we were walking to the Superkilen. It was such a pleasure walking aimlessly without any direction or map. We were in no hurry and had nothing but time. It was interesting reading the gravestones and seeing these monuments. The grounds are so beautifully maintained with gorgeous flowering trees. I wonder... More

We used to live next to Assistens Cemetary which is a resting place for many Danish celebrities, i.e. Hans Christian Andersen, Niels Bohr and Soren Kierkegaard. Visiting the cemetary is highly recommended during summer where it can serve as a perfect silent hideaway with plenty of fresh air.

A combination of parc and cemetery. At the older part of the cemetery you're aloud to have a picnic of sunbath. There are a lot of famous people buried here and there is a lot to see. For everyone who enjoys walking in a parc this is worth a visit.

The cemetery is famous because of its famous inhabitants - Hans Christian Andersen and Kierkegaard. It's a decent cemetery, but there wasn't much that truly stood out.

HC Andersen and Kierkegaard lie here. This is a nice cemetary that is surrounded by grass and trees and frequented by people of all ages and creeds.

Beautiful cemetery with a proper gloomy feel in November. It has the gravestones of Kierkegaard, Hans Christian Andersen and the very impressive tomb of Niels Bohr. It wasn't very crowded in late afternoon, and it's really big enough to walk around for a few hours if that's your thing.

I thought it was at first a park. How beautiful yet sad but really worth strolling through. The graves were dated adding history to it. I was very intrigued by all of this.

Even though I live nearby and often come to Assistens, I always enjoy the atmosphere and notice new details. Apart from the 'celebrity' graves of the likes of Kierkegaard and Hans Christian Andersen, you can explore the many different sections and styles (and please respect the parts that are still used as local cemetery) - French nuns here, Russian orthodox... We visited to find the grave of Hans Christian Anderson and were pleased to find a tranquil place with beautiful trees even in Winter. All we could hear were trains in the distance and there were many interesting graves to look at.

It's amazing to feel this comfortable waling through a cemetery that is also a park area. Birds, kids, snow, couples. Some great and interesting people rest here. Good to meditate on their contributions to the world. Made me think of other interesting cemeteries like Per Lachais in Paris, Clovelly in Sydney and Mirogoj in Zagreb.
