    walk in a citadel
Called Kastellet by the Danes, Citadelt Frederikshavn is a star-shaped military structure. It was King Christian IV who decided to build it in 1626 to ensure the protection of northern Copenhagen. You can access it for free and you can tour the fortifications. There is a mill there And it's located right next to the Little Mermaid.

    I loved it!
Kastellett... Ancient star-shaped military fortress surrounded by a moat.. it is a fantastic place, surrounded by lots of greenery, small bridges, ducks and a beautiful mill. We were enchanted by it. I recommend everyone to visit this magnificent place with free entry.

    Historic stop
A green area near the little mermaid with a lot of architecture of the former Citadel. A well conserved defense structure where you can walk around, still being used by the way. Lot to see here: historic mill, a monument in honour of...

    One of our favourites!
Kastellet ("The Citadel") is one of the best preserved fortresses in Northern Europe. A number of buildings are located within the grounds, including the Citadel Church as well as a windmill. The Commander's House, which was built in 1725, served as the official residence of the Chief of Defence until 2008. The Rows are six two-storey terraces which were originally built by Henrik Ruise as barracks for the soldiers. The two storehouses also date from the foundation of the Citadel. The Citadel Church was built in 1703–4 during the reign of King Frederik IV. It includes sound holes to the prison to enable prisoners to follow services. A prison complex was built on the rear side of the church in 1725. Eye holes in the wall between the church and the prison cells made it possible for the prisoners to follow the church services. On the King's Bastion, in the southwestern corner of Kastellet, stands a windmill built in 1847. See our pics from another gorgeous weather day!

    A GREAT DEFENSIVE WALL
Fortification built in 1626 to strengthen the security of the city, a great defensive wall. It is currently a military barracks where ancient cannons can be seen. It is entered for free. There is a large public park to explore, surrounded by a lake. A few meters away, by the entrance of the southern part we find the beautiful Fountain of Gefion and the old Church of San Albano.

    Beautiful.
Fortress on the Copenhagen Fjord which still houses a military detachment. It is practically all accessible and it is very nice to walk the perimeter between the greenery, kept a little perfectly in perfect Danish style, and the perimeter ditch. Numerous tourists and coaches flock to the quay where Andersen's Little Mermaid statue is located. Another masterful example of how you should enhance the cultural heritage you have. If we were able to do it in Italy we could have the highest GDP in the world just for this!!!! Bravi Danesi!!!!

    Peaceful space
A lovely peaceful place to walk round the embankments and take in the views. So close to the little mermaid but most people probably don't visit. The walk round the embankments and seeing the windmill, church and barracks was more impressive than the mermaid to be honest and free.

Is This a Fort or Not?
If you are leaving your cruise ship and pass by what appears to be nice greenery and meandering rivers don't be fooled. Welcome to the Citadel. It seems nice and peaceful from the outside. However, you can walk through and get closer to the windmill, church, and what appear to be barracks. There are guards but you can pass through without screening. Nice to know what is on the other side of the moat.

    Beautiful in autumn colours
We had a great hour long stroll around the area (outside the moat looking onto the fort, on top of the ramparts, and through the fort itself), such beautiful scenery. Lots of joggers/runners if that is more your thing. We visited on a sunny day while the leaves were changing colour and took so many photos. The buildings within the fort were also colourful and worth a look, although we couldn’t go inside. I would have loved to learn more about the history/ongoing use, but only saw one brief sign on the entrance.

    Andate!
Accessible fortress, a bit far from the rest but definitely beautiful. Well-kept and green, the mill was beautiful, the view as well. We reached him after seeing the little mermaid. There is an air of serenity and tranquility.

It's interesting that this former fortress is now a public park. It's a fairly small enclosure with rather austere blocky military buildings, but it did have a beautifully done memorial to the Danes who have gone abroad for humanitarian aid, including a section for those who died on missions. There was a small, interesting exhibit on Denmark's peace-keeping and humanitarian efforts all over the world. The little church is very plain inside, but you can see the cut-out into the jail cells so the prisoners could hear the sermons. Walking along the bastions gives you a great view of the water and the other sections of the city. It's a great spot of a nice walk and it's very quiet.

The Kastellet, Copenhagen's fortress that was built in the 1600s, is a wonderful spot to go for a stroll on a warm day. Admission to the grounds is free and the long walk on the ramparts provides great views. Some of the barrack buildings are open for tours and there is a small museum.

A beautiful fort, with lovely shaded walks along the periphery canal. The inside of the fort is also worth strolling around - it has a functioning military barracks, as well as a full sized windmill. It is within a pleasant walking distance of Nyhaven and the Little Mermaid statue.

This fort in the north side of the central city provides a large green space and walking paths in addition to the museum rooms and historical sights. Surrounded by a moat we walked atop the embankment and enjoyed views of the fort and the city. A colorful windmill, a serene chapel, and barracks were fun to view. It’s a nice spot to escape the busy town while enjoying the history and scenery.

This area provides some wonderful walks. There is the greater parkland to walk around as well as the fortifications which are a must visit in Copenhagen. There are some beautiful views and you can see the Little Mermaid statue from the top. For a nice relaxing stroll, it's well worth a visit.

As soon as we walked onto the grounds, we could hear the birds. CPH is a very quiet city, but even so, we heard and saw no wildlife until entering these grounds. Great place for a walk or run. Very peaceful and beautiful.

This is one of my favorite places to walk in Copenhagen. The Kastellet is a 17th century earthen-work star fortress and is the most complete fortress of it's type remaining in Europe. The interior is still and active military post. You can walk on the top around the five bastions and walls with a nice view of the city and harbor. The water in the moat has a number of egrets, swans, ducks, geese, and other waterfowl. Great history combined with some exercise makes this one of my favorite places. It is very common to see Danes walking or running around the paths.

Arriving early and entering through impressive gates we enjoyed lovely strolls around the fabulous complex.

An active military area, its overriding attraction for locals and visitors is as a tranquil park within the city. There is much to see.

Six terraces of two storey houses in red brick, The Rows, built originally as barracks are impressive. The Citadel Church in Baroque style and hues of yellow and red was not yet open, but the facades are attractive.

The Commander's House dates from 1725 and is lovely in yellow and red roof. Ascending the grassy ramparts gives a great walk on high. Here is the windmill as well as fine vistas over the extensive compound.

An evocative Monument For Denmark's International Effort Since 1948 is a must-see. It was unveiled in 2011 and is the work of artist Finn Reinbothe. An eternal flame burns and is one of the memorials and dedications.

Well worth a walk through the current buildings and more particularly around the high tops of the grassed banks. Great views of surrounds, lovely landscaping and you get a good idea of the scale of this fortressing.

A great walk even if its raining & cold. We walked from Nyhavn via the river to the fortress and back into the city along a main avenue through København. Terrific sightseeing.

If you go to visit the little mermaid... right in the same park there is the Kastellett... Ancient military fortress in the shape of a star surrounded by a moat... We went there with the bike... in this case be careful because Access by bike is only permitted for the lower part... you practically cannot climb the stairs to go and see the famous mill and the ramparts... (Obviously you can continue on foot) .... The mill and all the greenery around, I loved it. Free admission. If you go to see the little mermaid... stop by here too... peace and quiet are assured and maybe you can even have a nice picnic on the grass.
