This hippy enclave is an alternative community unto itself, with local handicrafts and a disproportionate number of vegetarians, artists and young people. Go for a walk around the lake or check out one of the watering holes. Best to visit during the day.

Living in Copenhagen I have visited this place many times. Not for the obvious reason - I don't smoke joints. But I enjoy taking a walk through Christiania for many other reasons. The quiteness of no traffic, the joy of seeing a different way of life, the many variaties of housing, entreprenours etc. I love the idea, that our democracy... More

I did not plan to visit this place, but I did not want to separate from the team. This subculture is not interesting to me, I do not use drugs. I have just enjoyed a beautiful lake with swans and houses on the other side of the bridge. Some people really look suspicious. The smell of anasha is unpleasant. Shops... More

There's still an artistic vibe in the buildings and the people often putting some show on and you can find a lot of interesting things by walking around, but it seems they've realised that they need to fund their unproductive lifestyles by being a grungy market, with the vendors being much more aggressive than elsewhere in Copenhagen. The weed sellers... More

I had heard of Christiania being a hippie commune and was very interested in seeing what it is all about, however as we were looking around a team of (police?) raided the commune. Before that it just seemed like a bunch of people standing around selling clothes and other.. things.

Took a little time and a walk to find it but this is a unique setting offering some great photography opportunities ,food of a reasonable standard and price. Some brilliant street art and the opportunity to be involved in some alternate life style environments. Locals are inviting and friendly. Don't miss the visit. No cost to enter the "village". Won't... More

Dont go near this area. All they want is to sell their illegal stuff and they are being very hostile when you dont intend to buy anything.

We visited Christina middle of the day and it was crawling with tourists. It did not seem to have the vibe that I expected. It was very run down and nobody was very friendly. Right after we went through pusher street we heard a lot of commotion and a big crowd formed about the time we decided it was time... More

I just loved it. It has its own spirit that you can not find anywhere else. It was very good experience and for sure I want to return again. It is not for everybody, but it wsd definitely place of my taste. Unfortunately, you can not take pictures, but what you will see will stay in yourbmijd forever.

This was a really cool place to visit. There is great art around and a cool vibe. We spent the sunny afternoon drinking beer and squash while listening to jazz music in the sun outside "The Moon". My Danish friend brought me here, and I'm glad I'd local info. It would probably be hard to know where you can and... More

Staying in Christianshavn

Neighbourhood Profile
Christianshavn
Just across one of the many bridges from Indre By, you’ll find Christianshavn. An eclectic area with old brick lanes, houses dating back to the 16th century, and canals which are home to many boats and ships, some of which has been turned into restaurants or even serve as fully furnished homes. The best known attraction in Chistianshavn is Christiania, a “free town” of residents who squat on a former military area. However just a stone’s throw away from Christiania, you’ll find some of the most fashionable waterfront apartment buildings in Copenhagen as well as the splendid Royal Opera House.
