This hippy enclave is an alternative community unto itself, with local handicrafts and a disproportionate number of vegetarians, artists and young people. Go for a walk around the lake or check out one of the watering holes. Best to visit during the day.

This place is unusual even for advanced travelers. You will not see smth beautiful there, but it worth to see one time. Pretty sure it will be more unpleasant for girls than for boys, and don't forget to take your camera away. Although you can secretly make some pics with you phone ) I can reccomend to visit this place... More

A bizarre post apocalyptic town. We went at night and people were huddled around barrels of fire warming themselves. We did not feel welcome! Fine for a quick stop to gawp at what society could be if a nuclear holocaust took place. Other than that there are beautiful sights in Copenhagen to see where you can warm yourself in the... More

One of the most amazing places that Copenhagen hides. The best time to come is when the sun goes down, you'll see a wonderful sunset!

Graffiti over all the walls and the fence surrounding the Free city of Christiania gives the tone for the colorful and hippy atmosphere. The smell of pot laying over, no photos allowed. The people selling it are nice, I got asked for age before being allowed to buy a cookie or some buds which is great. It is also an... More

Nothing to do, terrible place to go with only drug dealers and unhappy/negative young people hanging around. Don't go there, it's not worth your time.

I love the idea of a free space where people can work in co-operation. The philosophy behind the place is excellent. It's dirty, hippy rubbish, though. People are just here to gawp and it seems nothing much is left of the founding ideals. Some graffiti about drugs and plenty of broken stuff lying about. It can't even claim to be... More

Even though the old town of Christiania has its charm and a very interesting history (it was squatted by hippies to create a free place for the free thinkers and the outcasts), the once so beautiful dream has become something quite different. The Main Street, Pusher Street, is dominated by masked people shouting at people not to photograph, while the... More

I found Christiania rather weird. I loved the history and the ideals of the place, that is why I wanted to see it. But I found it merely a hangout to buy drugs, so sad it has become like this. When you walk you can still feel some of the authentic vibe but really it has been overtaken by drug... More

"Don't try this at home" One of the most astonishing places I've been in my life. Contrary to what is said, Christiana still exists, because only pusher street was shut down (and actually it's still there). You can take a sweet walk around the lake and enjoy your view with typical stuff sold in the neighborhood. Not only drugs, even... More

We went there in the dark new years eve and it was a bit scary in the dark with the explosions. Friendly people selling from booths. Easy to get good weed and taxi is always waiting outside :)

Staying in Christianshavn

Neighbourhood Profile
Christianshavn
Just across one of the many bridges from Indre By, you’ll find Christianshavn. An eclectic area with old brick lanes, houses dating back to the 16th century, and canals which are home to many boats and ships, some of which has been turned into restaurants or even serve as fully furnished homes. The best known attraction in Chistianshavn is Christiania, a “free town” of residents who squat on a former military area. However just a stone’s throw away from Christiania, you’ll find some of the most fashionable waterfront apartment buildings in Copenhagen as well as the splendid Royal Opera House.
