This hippy enclave is an alternative community unto itself, with local handicrafts and a disproportionate number of vegetarians, artists and young people. Go for a walk around the lake or check out one of the watering holes. Best to visit during the day.

We were told that it was safe to visit Christiania, a self sustained, self regulated community - but to absolutely NOT take photos while there. It is an alternative living space where many residents wear masks to disguise their identity and openly sell pot. While there you can see lots of wall murals - I wish I could have photographed.... Had a stroll through here saturday lunchtime. Lots of tourists like us but also lots of alternative chaps ..! This bit still quite rundown and very much a drug culture with openly drugs being sold. Signs up with " no photos" so show some care. Some arty things and the blacksmiths had some nice pieces. Very very different to the... More

Free town Christiania has a great vibe and is very different to the rest of the city. Be careful where you take photos though!!

Interesting place to walk through. We went through with our kids and it was a good lesson in alternative ways of living. Interesting grafitti to admire.

Alternative lifestyle with all kinds of illegal substances for sale openly in public. Interesting to visit and spend a few hours on a sunny afternoon

Totally insane that criminals can rule a street in a modern country as Denmark. I've no problem with the so-called alternative lifestyle of the inhabitants of this former hippie-colony, but guys who hid their faces behind a scarf prohibiting me from making photographs is way out of league.

Loved it! It was amazing to see a different Kopenhagen, full of life, with no cars and lots of green areas. The self sustained and self ruled community is worth a visit! Please spend hours walking by, do not stay only in the center of Christiania, as there is a lot to see when you understand the living experience there.

I wanted to visit Christiania because it is a very famous place and you can't find it anywhere else. I was travelling alone and I didn't want to go on my own, so I went with a free tour and it was a very good idea. The guide was very funny and clever, he explained us many things and we... More

Christiana is unique and I wouldn't have missed it. But I also found it something of a downer,. Christiana is an experiment in which about 900 people are creating a community in which they're supposed to each take responsibility for the entire community and develop an economically sustainable community which has only a few rules. So, it's not an anarchy,... More

Staying in Christianshavn

Neighbourhood Profile
Christianshavn
Just across one of the many bridges from Indre By, you’ll find Christianshavn. An eclectic area with old brick lanes, houses dating back to the 16th century, and canals which are home to many boats and ships, some of which has been turned into restaurants or even serve as fully furnished homes. The best known attraction in Chistianshavn is Christiania, a “free town” of residents who squat on a former military area. However just a stone’s throw away from Christiania, you’ll find some of the most fashionable waterfront apartment buildings in Copenhagen as well as the splendid Royal Opera House.
