I love this castle. Beautifully constructed and located by a lake. There are so much royal collections and artifacts that it took me much longer than planned. And yet I think it is worthwhile. The chapel in particular is both beautiful and opulent. No doubt that...More

We used our Copenhagen card to take the train to Hilerod to visit this amazing castle, gardens and town. I especially loved all the art work displayed inside the castle. The grounds were absolutely amazing. The day we visited was a little cold and windy....More

I had heard this was the Versailles of Denmark and therefore had high expectations. Happy to say I was not let down! It's very different than Versailles (besides the gorgeous gardens) with ornate ceilings and grand rooms. The audio tour is excellent and getting there...More

The castle and surrounding gardens are beautiful. We enjoyed the audio tour and it was just the right length for us. If you're in the area it's definitely a worthwhile stop, and worth the little extra for he guided tour.

A wonderful area for a stroll, i walk my dog here all the time and always enjoy the atmosphere and look at the castle. The museum is an interesting place to go just once in a while, they have beautiful furniture, paintings and other decorations.

This a place which will take you to the bygone era though you are very close to the modern civilization. The structure of the castle is beautiful and the surrounding is fantastic. Enjoyed my day by waking along the different areas! Worth visit here.

Could have spent entire day sitting by water looking at the grounds. Seriously lovely, beautiful setting, not far from train station & easy afternoon escape from Copenhagen. Exceptionally clean grounds. A highlight of our Denmark trip.

This castle was mostly built during the reign of Christian IV of Denmark. He was larger than life, and so is his castle. There's a wealth of architecture, art and history here--and we didn't even have time for the grounds, which are just beginning to...More

Questions & AnswersAsk a question
I plan to visit Denmark in mid-May 2017. Is it possible to visit both Frederiksborg Slot (Hillerod) and Kronborg Slot (Helsingoer) in a single day using public transportation (train, bus by Copenhagen Card) from Copenhagen City Centre? If yes, which trains and buses do I catch from Copenhagen to Hillerod to Helsingoer and back to Copenhagen? Sounds like a full day! Appreciate Trip Advisor members thoughts and guidance!

Yes, it is quite possible to do this. Take an S- train Line E to Hillerod...About a 45 minute trip. You won't need to catch a bus. You will walk through town to the Castle. You'll walk past a number of nice shops and... More
We'll be in Copenhagen just after Christmas. I notice that Frederiksborg Castle and Hillerod Castle have limited hours in the winter. Is it reasonable to get a glimpse of each of them in one day or would you suggest visiting on two different days so we won't be rushed? Thanks for your advice! Lisa

One day is adequate if you want to miss a lot of each. Remember these are pretty extensive places. Just like anyplace you visit, it just depends how much time you want to spend enjoying it.
