Experience the unique joy of traveling along a railway line in your own powered self-drive railway vehicle, called a RailCruiser.

The RailCruiser is a fully automated, state of the art petrol-electric four seat self-drive railway vehicle, with comfortable seats and unobstructed views. It is fitted with clear drop down waterproof sides.

Departing from Mamaku Railway Station travel 10km through a majestic 1000 year old native forest, past rolling pastures with views out over Lake Rotorua to Tarukenga Railway Station. After a short break at Tarukenga whilst the RailCruisers are turned, you return in your RailCruiser back to Mamaku.

Cruising along at 20km/hr, you can listen to the audio tour. This is the ultimate way to experience a railway.

Such a clever use of a former railway line! Beginning at the warm Mamaku station with hot chocolate in hand, we listened to the briefing lady aided by a video, explain the safety features and what could be expected during the journey. Having selected the Brakeman, we hopped on our little rail buggy, were familiarised with the controls then were... More

Well worth a visit. A lot of work and effort has gone into developing this attraction. 91 year old enjoyed it too. If going during winter make sure you have a good jacket. Hosts do provide a rug but you benefit by having a bit more.

We have just spent the weekend in Rotorua, experiencing some of the many great things to do. This afternoon we drove out to the Mamaku Railway and took a trip down the old trunk line formerly used to transport timber in the boom timber milling days. So fantastic to see the old railway tracks being put back to good use,... More

We went Railcruising over the Easter weekend. Something different for us and it was a great experience. Mamaku Railway Station is a little out of Rotorua, so it is probably best to book first as we went out there expecting to get a ride only to be disappointed and have to come back the next day. The staff are well... More

We visited this attraction and were pleasantly surprised at the whole set-up. It was extremely well organised with everything taken care of - from blankets and heating in the little carriages, GPS monitoring and even tea/coffee included. We found the carriages more than comfortable, bigger than we thought they would be and traveled quicker than expected. Enjoyed the commentary as... More

We loved it. It's worth the drive (it's about 30min drive from Rotorua) and good value if you are a fan or railways and trains. Railcruising put good use of an existing railway system and developed it into a tourist attraction. You gotta travel within the scenic reserve where no public is accessible. It's breathtaking! Due to the fact that... More
