Neighbourhood: Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen
Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s historic old town and home to the Swedish Royal Palace. It’s the most central island of Stockholm and accompanied by the small island of Riddarholmen, mainly known for its famous Riddarholm Church. Gamla Stan tends to be a bit touristy at times but is definitely worth visiting: take a stroll past the well-preserved buildings and through the small (and also Sweden’s narrowest) alleys, which will make you feel like you’ve travelled back in time. This neighborhood offers a great combination of historical buildings and traditional Swedish restaurants.

A big statue on an upslope in the Gamla Stan district. Located on a little hill above a tiny park with a little fountain. Of course it is dedicated to the famous saint who is venerated all over the world. Classic art.

This wonderfully designed statue is a part of the itinerary exploring Old Town. Mostly for photo ops. At the background are locals and tourists taking a seat and resting from the long walks.

According to a plaque on the pedestal, the huge sculpture of Saint George slaying the dragon at Köpmanstorget is a copy of a wooden original from 1489 by Bernt Notke in Stockholm’s cathedral. The bronze is a gift from industrialist and consul Hjalmar Wicander (1860–1939). Although the original is not to be missed, the copy contributes to the magical atmosphere of the Old Town. The kneeling princess is said to represent Sweden, menaced by the Danish dragon and saved by regent Sten Sture the Elder. We have no idea why Tripadvisor rejected our proposal to bring the English TA entry (‘Statue of St. George’) in line with the Swedish name of the statue: ‘Statyn Sankt Göran och draken’. Especially because representations of Saint George without the dragon are not unheard of.

If I ever have a statue made of me, I want it to look like this! This thing is awesome. A pleasant surprise to stumble on while strolling around Gamla Stan.

One of the great things about Stockholm is the huge number of statues all around the city. The statue of St. George is one of the more impressive ones. The bronze statue of St George fighting the dragon was erected in 1912. Our walking tour took us by the statue, which is in Köpmantorget (Merchants Square) in Gamla Stan. The dragon is said to represent Denmark and the small statue of a maiden to the right of the statue is said to represent a thankful Sweden. Definitely worth a visit while in Gamla Stan.

This is a dramatic statue of Saint George vanquishing the dragon on a pleasant cobbled street within Old Town in Stockholm.

Quite a striking statue on the edge of the Old Town. The workmanshipp is intricate and detailed. The statue can be viewed from in front and also from below to give it a different perspective.

Found the nice statue when walking around Old town. Fun fact: George and the dragon is in the town seal in the city Holstebro in Denmark and they have several statures around in the town.
