Neighbourhood: Kungsholmen
Kungsholmen is one of the largest islands in central Stockholm and one of the most popular places to live. Its most famous attraction is Stockholm’s City Hall, which stands out with its monumental architecture and is one of the most photographed buildings in Sweden. Kungsholmen has its own little city center and shopping mall, its own beach and a lovely pedestrian area next to the water, which charms both locals and visitors with beautiful little cafés, restaurants and of course an awesome view. This neighborhood is perfect for a relaxed stroll followed by some coffee on a Sunday afternoon.

- BaydeNoc186 contributionsVery ImpressiveTook the tour and it was well worth it. Architecture and story of the construction was very interesting. Loved the account of how they hold the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony and dinner in the hall, 1400 attendees. Great visit.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten September 21, 2023

The young lady that gave the guided tour was excellent and the interior is spectacular and totally unexpected. Definitely include this in a Stockholm visit.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 31, 2023
- carlosParis, France3 contributionsStockholm with kids and familyVery nice city with a lots of museums and things to do. Very nice restaurants and walking or jogging routes. For families the Vasa Museum the boats trip ( under the bridges) and Skansen are good options. Very important is not to go with cash. They accept just cards ( in the hole city).Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten November 12, 2023

Interesting guided tour that in an easy way went through the premises for the Nobel Prize dinner and the premises for the decision-makers in the city of Stockholm. - Emma M1 contributionOne of the highlights of our trip! Our tour of Stockholm City Hall was certainly a highlight of our weekend break to Stockholm. At 45 mins in length it is perfect for keeping your attention and allows enough time to see each of the rooms including the hall used for the Nobel Prize Banquet. You can only visit by booking a guided tour and I would advise pre booking as on the day we visited the first two tours were already sold out. You can take pictures inside the hall during the tour and you are free to wonder around the courtyard and gardens ( which have fabulous views overlooking the water) without paying. There is a cafe and restaurant, although we didn’t use, them plus a gift shop. I must take a few minutes to commend our fabulous guide. We were on the 2pm tour on the 19th Feb and although I’m sorry not to remember her name, she was amazing, friendly and professional. Interesting, knowledgable, and passionate about her work place and culture are three more words I would use to describe her. The pace of the tour was perfect and so was the group size ( I think there were around 10 of us). The lady who sold us our tickets in the morning was also very friendly, helpful and patient while we took time deciding which tour to book. The ladies who welcomed us into the hall were also very friendly and welcoming. A few things to note. A meeting is held in one of the rooms on the tour on the third Monday of each month so avoid the 3pm tour on that day as you may not get to see it and weddings are held on Saturdays so some rooms may not be available then either, although you may get to see the couples taking photos in the courtyard. There are toilets inside the lobby you are able to enter 10 mins before the tour starts and a cloak room too. It is an unmanned cloakroom but you are able to leave things there if you wish. Backpacks must be worn on your front during the tour or left in the cloakroom. All in all it is an excellent experience and very good value for money at approximately £11 per person. - Gary MillarNorthampton, United Kingdom567 contributionsAwesome! Definitely worth a visitYou must find time to visit this incredible and imposing building while in Stockholm. What a location, looking out over the water in the heart of the City - outstanding views, amazing architecture, and full of history. What's not to like! Was being refurbished at time of our visit, so some scaffolding and work activities externally. Definitely worth a visit.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten April 19, 2024
- SWH100Cardiff, United Kingdom1,717 contributionsWorth the walk - gorgeous views across the waterJust a little outside the main city, but it’s well worth the walk over. We didn’t go inside but the building is really cool. The best thing was the view over the water. It was all iced up when we were there and was so beautiful. Really enjoyed this trip.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten April 28, 2024
- Chooster68New York26 contributionsGreat experience!I started my visit of City Hall with the tower climb. Although you are not allowed to bring a large bag up to the tower you can leave your items with the attendant downstairs. You have the option to take the stairs the entire way or take an elevator halfway up. There is a sculpture gallery on the floor where the elevator stops. Don’t linger here too long since there is a limit on how much time you can spend at the top. The views of Gamla Stan and the rest of Stockholm are fantastic. You will be done in exactly 35 minutes as stated, the staff will tell you when it’s time to leave since only one group at a time is allowed inside the tower. The City Hall tour was enjoyable as well. Since it is not open to the public except through a tour you feel like you have the place to yourself. There are not many rooms to see but they are all spectacular and the guide did a good job describing the history of the building, the functions of each room, the Nobel dinner, and the operations of city government. The tour took just about 45 minutes. If you have some time between the tower and hall you should check out the small but beautiful park right by the water.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten May 15, 2024
- Natasha_VarArad County, Romania103 contributionsCity viewIt's a must have when you visit the city. You can have the guided your inside the city hall and then climb in the tower. It has an elevator ride to an intermediary level which has an exhibition of statues and then it's by foot until you reach the top and from there some stairs. The view of the city is worth the climbing. You cannot climb with massive bags so you will have to have them stored downstairs.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten May 16, 2024

We walked a considerable distance to visit the City Hall, only to be told when we got there that they had stopped doing tower tours a few days before due to students going back to school. That was not mentioned on their website and the dates, times were quite different from our guide books. The general tours were sold out for the remainder of that day (plan for your tickets well in advance) and the staff told us to come back another day around 8:00 to que for a limited number of tickets. We decide to pass, view the outside (quite nice), and move on the other interesting sites.

Though our Cruise Ship stop was only for 5 hours (August 2019), I was lucky to catch the one hour tour of City Hall. Our tour guide had hardly any accent and her English was nice and clear. It was interesting to hear the history from her, and see several different rooms, though unfortunately a couple of rooms (with the tapestries) were in use when we were there so they were closed off. Had a great time, overall!

We joined the English tour. The lady that took us around provided considerable detail about the building and had a good sense of humour both of which made the trip really enjoyable. Only thing to note is that the Tower is closed in winter.

The Stockholm city hall is known for having the Noble Prize ceremonies.
The city hall has a small garden with a terrific views, and they get better from the city hall tower (extra charge, worth it).
Many people don't notice (not even the locals) but this tower appears for about a second in the clip of Europe's "The final Countdown".
We took the guided tour - the tour guide was knowledgeable, nice and patient. We learned about the building's history, Noble ceremonies, about the council chambers design and daily routine, and of course the Golden room.
For a first visit to the city, the Stockholm city hall is a must.

City Hall, a huge structure built of 8,000,000 red bricks. It can be seen from a distance due to its size and the spire on the roof. Inside is a large courtyard. On the ground floor there are 2 halls. The Blue Hall and the Red Hall. In the Blue Hall, a ball was held for the Nobel Prize winners together with the royal family, according to the rules of the ceremony. On the first floor there is a hall with amazing columns and paintings of one of the princes, instead you can get married in a civil wedding, of course for a fee. Next is a large hall with a mural. The walls are lined with 11,000 real gold leaves, the leaves are separated by glass. On one side of the wall - war heroes, kings. In the second wall - scientists, inventors, people who contributed to the development of Sweden.

It was a great experience when we visited Stockholm City Hall and to learn the story of Alfred Nobel. The beauty of the city hall is one thing, but the award that is held there every year for the Nobel Prize really touches me. It was a great feeling to walk into the blue hall and feel that every 10th of December someone who made a great contribution to mankind in academic field will be awarded, and acknowledged for the work that was done. Thank you Stockholm for the opportunity! Just to walk the hall feels great!

Amidst all of the jewels on the Stockholm tourist trail (The Vasa, The Old Town, The Viking Museum etc), there is a little gem that is hidden in plain sight that can be easily overlooked.
It's well worth the SEK130 admission fee and takes between 1-2 hours to go around it. The price includes an excellent guided tour. Our guide was very clear an informative.
It's incredible to believe it was only built in 1911, given that the style harks back to an older era.
Sadly we were not able to access the tower but it is still worth a visit.

Guided Tour was knowledgeable, she was very thorough about the building, and explained the history behind each room. She talked about the architecture and the history of it. She also shared pictures & spoke about Noble Prize banquet that is held there every December. Enjoyed it very much!

They only do guided tours since it's an administration building, the tour last 45 min. You learn a lot about the history of the building and how it became the place that hosts the Nobel banquet. The golden room is very very impressive and worth seeing.

Can one person arrive early and get tickets for the full group for a time later in the day? We will be coming in August with a group of 4 and I am wondering if all of us have to be there to get our own ticket.
Written June 16, 2019
Yes, you can arrive earlier and get tickets for your group of 4, assuming that you will be part of the hourly public tour guided by a docent. You just need to let the staff know the number of adults, children, students and seniors in your group and the time you'd like to visit. You will get a small sticker per each person in your group to put on hand or clothes for admission. Please see my review of Stockholm City Hall for other detail. Have fun!

buon viaggio
