Worth the wander across from Gamla Stan to view this impressive structure and go inside if you have time, also carry on past to the waters edge to see impressive views of City Hall

This is a wonderful Church. Inside it is huge and with an impressive ceiling. Outside it is great to look at the different phases of the building which is evident from the different types of material - we found it fascinating to walk round and admire it

Walked past this pretty old church whilst on the way to Gamla Stan. Being late on a Friday afternoon it was unfortunately closed for visits. But still possible to admire the impressive exterior.

This church is a fantastic part of the Catholic heritage in Sweden, built in the 14th century. Don't miss it while visiting Stockholm!

The church's architecture is absolutely beautiful, but it's kind of creepy that the place was only used for burial ceremonies of royalty. It's worth a quick visit, especially as you head to or from Gamla Stan.

This is a perfect spot, just located on a small island of it's own easily reached by a bridge just between the Old Town and the Central Station of Stockholm !

Walking back late from a day of shopping, we came across the Riddarholm Church just as the rain was starting. In a word...creepy. Think quiet, late, dark, gloomy, heavy mist...and a large church. Looking forward to getting the pictures downloaded on this one as the ambience was simply creepy. I was unaware of all the history, but given the setting,... More

The church is beautiful from the outside...inside is a different story. From the moment you step into the main room, you are walking on a burial ground. The thunderstorm outside did not help with the uneasiness...glad I went with other people; otherwise, I'd have left right away, and missed out on the history.

Staying in Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen

Neighbourhood Profile
Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen
Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s historic old town and home to the Swedish Royal Palace. It’s the most central island of Stockholm and accompanied by the small island of Riddarholmen, mainly known for its famous Riddarholm Church. Gamla Stan tends to be a bit touristy at times but is definitely worth visiting: take a stroll past the well-preserved buildings and through the small (and also Sweden’s narrowest) alleys, which will make you feel like you’ve travelled back in time. This neighborhood offers a great combination of historical buildings and traditional Swedish restaurants.
