Great for visitors

A very good presented castle. Ingormative signs. Treasure hunt for small children, stunning views. The prison museum and outdoor museum was well worth the visit. Beautiful.

We had a great day out at the castle with the family. They had a tresure trail for the kids that took you all over the castle and gave an opportunity for the kids to engage with the exhibitions. Once we had seen the castle, we went next door to the open air museum with lovely old buildings, showing farmlife... More

Kastelholm provided historical context for the unique status of the Åland Islands. It's very accessible as far as medieval buildings go as boardwalks and steps have been added to ease passage. There was a treasure hunt that kids could participate in as well. Attached is a small representation of an Aland farm in the 1800s.

We went to Kastelholm in August this year, whilst I would say we under estimated the distance between the castle and Mariehamn! Some said 10k and some said 13k, but we believe it should 10miles or more, coz we felt like we were cycling up and down for 2.3hrs each way! So that's what I will say about cycling there.... More

We took the tour in English (there is a particular time for it). The old lady who did the tour was lovely and told a lot of interesting facts. However do not expect to see a lot of artefacts, as the castle was abandoned for some time before the restoration. There is a cafe nearby (couple of minutes walk) as... More

We visited the Castle on Sunday, so there was no restaurant or evev a cafe nearby. The castle is repaired and there was a guided tour. Nearby there is a rural museum and an old jail (now museum). Worth visiting while in Åland.

If you are looking for somewhere to look at an old castle and original traditional out buildings in the Aland Islands then this is well worth a visit. The display is all static but nevertheless interesting. The highlight is probably the associated restaurant "Jan Karlsgårdens Wärdshus". The chef Micke Björklund was named Chef of the Year in Sweden in 2000... More
