The building of Olavinlinna, castle of St. Olaf, began in 1475. The Danish-born founder of the castle, knight Erik Axelsson Tott, decided that a powerful fortification should be build to protect the strategically important Savo region. The castle was supposed to repel Russian attacks from the east and to guarantee the control of the Savo region for the Swedish Crown. The history of Olavinlinna is a mixture of medieval arms clashing, cannons roaring and every-day chores inside the security of the castle's thick walls. The changes in the ownership of the castle left their mark on Olavinlinna: this can be seen in the varied architecture of the castle. These days the castle's halls and rooms can be rented and used for all kinds of events.

Great Olaf's Castle in Savonlinna. Is a 15th-century - three towel castle. You can see inside small exhibitions. It is very nice to walk inside and think about how was earlier living in the Castle.

The castle is originally medieval, with additions until late 18th century, originally built by Swedes on Russian territory to protect their aquisitions and future conquests. The towers are famous, appearing even in Hergé's album King Ottokar's Sceptre. Fallen in disuse after 1809 it has seen some restoration in 20th century. Little interior is preserved but the history of this border... More

Great views, rare snow in November. Wife, kids and I were taken on a tour to the towers, hidden operatic chambers and some beautiful vistas. Our guide was a nice gentleman, very well versed in local stories.

There was some sort of renovation going on. We visited on a saturday, October 1st. We went to the Riihisaari museum first, and bought joint entrance tickets to the museum and the castle, which costed 10 euros a person. However, when we arrived at the castle, no staff was there at all, to whom we can show the tickets. We... More

If you are nearby, it is definitely worth a visit. The view from the castle is also very nice, above the lakes,

The castle is set on the lake and it's a good location for your photos. It's not very big, you can explore it during one hour. Tickets for 9 € or 10 € including the museum. You cannot visit the towers without the guides. Sometimes on the ground floor there are classical music tests

Excellent tour in English, got to see and experience a unique part of Finnish history. Steep medieval stairs, especially the 39 steps to the high tower may be challenging for little ones, and pretty much inaccessible for anyone with mobility issues. Beautiful location to see in late August.

Visited the castle at night for the opera. What a wonderful experience. The castle can be viewed from both the water and land, though should be seen from both. Amazing castle surrounded by water.

Was well worth the two hour drive from Kuopio. 10€ gets you in with a guided, 1hr tour in English, and free entry to the "boat museum" a short walk away. Lots of history and, if you like castles, it's worth it.

Thank Derek H
