Helsinki Zoo is one of the few zoos in the world located on an island. A 20 minute ferry (summer) or bus ride from the city centre will take you to a zoo where you can travel from cold mountain regions to dry steppes and from northern coniferous forests to the tropical rainforest. It is the perfect place to visit due to its natural environment, animals and history. Helsinki Zoo is home to 150 animal and 1000 plant species showcasing the diversity of nature. Meet the large Amur tigers, tiny pygmy marmosets, agile snow leopards, impressive wisents and dazzling, free roaming peafowls. Not to mention the indigenous Finnish species: elk, bear, wolverine, forest reindeer and more.

The zoo was established already in 1889 and this makes it one of the oldest zoos in the world. Despite the long history and historic surroundings, Helsinki Zoo is a modern zoo with a mission to conserve biodiversity. Helsinki zoo breeds endangered species and participates in programs that aim to re-introduce animals to their natural habitats. Helsinki Zoo is renowned for its work in helping endangered big cats. Helsinki Zoo is the most significant annual donor for the conservation of the endangered Amur leopard and tiger.

Great location but there are not so many animals: didnot see the lion when we visited: the leopard is so great to see though!

The zoo is really good and big. We enjoyed the beauty of nature, clean and spacious cages for animals, rejoiced about the comfort with which predatory cats and monkeys live there. It can take a whole day if you walk slowly.

I went there this Easter and even though the weather wasn't very good and some of the animals have hidden themselves, the overall experience was pretty good! I especially liked the restaurant from where you can look at the bears' place, the Amazonian part was absolutely amazing, and of course that I got my face painted as a parrot -... More

Visited here while stopped over in Helsinki, it is a nice place on its own little island away from the big city, they have some nice animals on display there that look like they are well liked after.

Helsinki is a lovely, beautiful place with friendly people, but although this island is beautiful and peaceful with a lot of nature the big cats especially did not look happy. Even my 7 year old boy noticed that the enclosures they are kept in are too small. I would have enjoyed the experience more if there had been less exotic... More

This is one of the better zoos than I have been too, not far from the city centre, nice and clean where one can roam freely and be close to nature, the entry fees is nominal and there is a restaurant, you can also bring in your food and eat. A lovely zoo with lots of animals to see. A... More

Korkeasaari is a perfect place to go for a day out. On top of seeing animals, you get very nice views of the city of Helsinki too (if you neglect the construction sites at Kalasatama). During the winter season it's also very quiet and you get lots of space for just yourself and avoid the large groups of kids. Go... More

Lovely zoo. Lots of animals to see. Most of the animals were out in their enclosures and it was very quite when we visited early morning. It was easy to get to, we got the bus from outside the central station you can't miss it as it has zoo animals printed on the side, it took around 25 minutes. It... More

It takes about 40 minutes to get to the Zoo from the city center, but it is definitely worth it. In addition to an extensive collection of birds and animals in open-air cages and special pavillions, you can meet peacocks and geese who walk free, so you have a chance to make great photos.
