Helsinki Zoo is one of the few zoos in the world located on an island. A 20 minute ferry (summer) or bus ride from the city centre will take you to a zoo where you can travel from cold mountain regions to dry steppes and from northern coniferous forests to the tropical rainforest. It is the perfect place to visit due to its natural environment, animals and history. Helsinki Zoo is home to 150 animal and 1000 plant species showcasing the diversity of nature. Meet the large Amur tigers, tiny pygmy marmosets, agile snow leopards, impressive wisents and dazzling, free roaming peafowls. Not to mention the indigenous Finnish species: elk, bear, wolverine, forest reindeer and more. The zoo was established already in 1889 and this makes it one of the oldest zoos in the world. Despite the long history and historic surroundings, Helsinki Zoo is a modern zoo with a mission to conserve biodiversity. Helsinki zoo breeds endangered species and participates in programs that aim to re-introduce animals to their natural habitats. Helsinki Zoo is renowned for its work in helping endangered big cats. Helsinki Zoo is the most significant annual donor for the conservation of the endangered Amur leopard and tiger.

The zoo is located on an island and it is full of trees and bushes, making you feel like you`re in the wild. The animals looked healthy, well fed and had rather big enclosures. However, visiting in summer may be best. I went on the...More

I visited the Zoo yesterday and it was almost empty. Restaurants were closed, There were exactly three other visitors and most animals were somewhere else :-( It was frustrating to walk all the long walks and see about ten animals. If you want to enjoy...More

Many animals aren't in the exhibits, many exhibits are empty. The variety of animals are very limited either its the mammals, reptiles, insects, and birds. This place is not for me, it could be a good place to bring your toddlers though.

A fantastic experience! Going on a boat to the island, with lovely weather and visiting this fantastic zoo with national and international animals. Entry to the zoo and boat trip is cheap, which is a plus for a family day out!

As much as anything, I enjoyed the return ferry trip, the views of the mainland and the walk round. The animals I saw were interesting too, but more than most zoos, the animals were exercising their right to privacy. Overall a good, but low-key half-day.

Korkeasaari has been there as long as I can remember. My earliest memories are of walking from empty cage to another, not really seeing the (hiding?) animals. But now we visited Korkeasaari with my family and to my surprise we saw tons of animals! Our...More

Luckily the sun was shining when we visited the zoo. Went on a family visit with my 82 year old mother who thoroughly enjoyed it. Plenty of places to stop and sit to rest whilst also looking at the animals. Especially loved the bears and...More

I have always loved this Zoo. You can quite easily spot the animals, but unlike for example in Berlin- they don't seem distressed and unhappy. It's also a perfect size to look through in 2-3 hours, you see everything but are not completely exhausted. I...More

Hello, and welcome to Finland! The quickest way depends on where you should be at 1pm. Both the ferry from the Market Place and the bus no 16 from the Central Railwaystation take about 20 minutes. As the first ferry leaves... More
