We both love Art Galleries and this one did not disappoint. For a small nation, Finland has produced more than its fair share of artists. Lucky enough to visit when there was an extra top floor exhibition of Alvar Aalto, the architect and designer. His work was "Ahead of its Time" - being produced in the 1930s when you expect... More

The Ateneum is a great place to visit on the weekend at any time of the year. The exhibitions range from well known international artists as well as the best of Finnish art from the 19th and 20th centuries. Also visit the gift area and the museum restaurant. The gift area has a wonderful offering of reference materials and prints.... More

The tone is set by the first painting - entirely blue, white and green - and the downstairs collection of post-war art seemed to have very distinctive Finnish colours and shapes (and a clear influence from both western and Soviet), and was my favourite. There are a lot of 19th and early 20th century pieces and the top floor has... More

The Ateneum is one of those places you have to visit if you want to experience something fundamentally Finnish. They have great exhibitions and a good permanent show. And I do love museum shops.

This is a great little museum which highlights the art of Finlands premier artists and also some international pieces too including from Rodin to Warhol. It was really interesting to check this out as I hadn't heard of most of these Finnish artists although the work was great and the lighting throughout this museum is excellent and really highlights the... Good introduction to Finnish art and history. Small. Primarily Finnish works and artists, intriguing, but I don't think my husband and I enjoyed it as much as someone with a bit more knowledge of Finnish art history and styles would.

I have been to the Ateneum Art Museum about 12 times in the 7 to 8 years, and it always impresses me. The displays are well designed and very interesting, the artwork on display is both interesting, but also if you are visiting Helsinki for the first time or have been there several times before and do not know about...
