Hotel and Restaurant Museum (Hotelli- ja ravintolamuseo, Hotell- och restaurangmuseet) is a special museum. It tells about food & drink culture and tourism in Finland. Admission is free with Museum Card, Helsinki Card and visitors under the age of 18 years.
I learned interesting facts in the museum. Here is one example. In 1943 we got a law that says that school lunch must be free for every pupil. So Finland is the world's first country, which started to serve a free hot lunch for every pupil 1948.

Focusing on the 1970's the updated permanent exhibition tells about the great social change in the life of many Finns. People left in vast masses the countryside where they had worked in agriculture to become employed in factories and all kinds of service professions. Many new ingredients were introduced in home cooking and eating out in restaurants became possible for families in a more relaxed athmosphere. There are brightly coloured photos of the emerging favourite dishes published in women's magazines.

This museum is specialized in the history of hotels, restaurants, cafes, tourism and Finnish culinary culture.
It gives nostalgic memories for us Finns but for others, it can be a little bit strange experience.
The scent bar is fun for everyone.

This is a fun museum that features the hotel and restaurant industry in Finland. The furnished rooms, pictures and objects are interesting and informative. The museum is not very big, so you might consider visiting the theatre and photography museum as well (located in the same building and you get a discount on the tickets).

Upstairs from the Photography museum at Kaapeli are two quite old fashioned museums from which it isn't even possible to know if the form chosen is intentional. The one concentrating on the history of our restaurant business and the special relation Finland has to alcohol - the monopoly, shouldn't at least lack money as the whole industry funds it. On a Friday evening the film about food waste did draw a full house and tourist children seemed to enjoy touching things in the model kitchen.

A strange subject for a museum and we only ended up here after going to the Theatre museum nearby, but saying that there were a few interesting bits and pieces to be found and a good way to pass an hour or so.
Something different and if you have time and a Helsinki card then this and the theatre museum are a fine way to spend a couple of hours.

A quite fun and atmospheric place and worth a visit if you are around the neighborhood. The "scent bar" is especially nice :)

Interesting for a non-native but not worth a detour. Photos and smell-quiz were fun & well labelled in English. Probably of more interest/relevance to those who have grown up in Finland or stayed in hotels in Finland during the 1970's and before.
