Víkin – the Reykjavík Maritime MuseumThe Museum is situated in Reykjavik’s picturesque active fishing harbor, only a 10 minute walk from the city center. Enjoy the fantastic view of the boats, fishermen and birdlife before entering the museum. For centuries Icelanders depended heavily on fishing and the sea for survival, and as a result the country has a long and rich maritime history. In the Reykjavik Maritime Museum you can explore this history, including beautiful ship-models, realistic scenery as well as both dried and life fish! The magnificent Coast Guard Vessel Óðinn, who took part in all three cod wars, is a part of the museum, docked outside in the beautiful harbor. Guided tours, please ask at the entrance. A wonderful place for a fun day out with family or friends!

Not really a museum

Very interesting but would be better defined as an "Experience" rather than a museum but it was good with headset guided tour.

For those interested in Iceland's fishing history, this is a go od museum. One highlight is a reenactment film that follows brave fishermen from the past out in a small open boat on the ocean in the winter for a full day from sunrise to darkness. What hardship! There are many interesting displays. It's on City Pass.

We went hoping to learn about vikings due to a school project but it was more about fishing. Despite this we had a great time and both my children enjoyed this visit Lots to see and do and my son enjoyed dressing up

Lots of detail about the cod wars with Great Britain, but other than that a collection of old fishing boat items.

I'm sure if you read the other reviews you will a good picture of this museum ... a mildly interesting picture of the Iceland fishing history, including a picture on how the industry changed over time, how the fishing families lived and the equipment used with a special exhibit on the "cod war" between the UK and Iceland. The museum... More

Well worth a visit. Excellent history of fishing in Iceland, including a large display about the cod wars in the 70's ( a bit skewed to Iceland not surprisingly).

One of my friends really wanted to visit this museum, left to my own devices I probably would not have gone. However it was super interesting!! We spent several hours wandering around the actual museum and then took the optional tour of the coast guard ship that's part of the museum which was also super cool.

First off, I have to say I'm biased. I love everything maritime. That being said, this museum is very informative about Iceland's maritime history, and their battles with the English over Cod.

Given that the fishing industry is a big one in Iceland, I enjoyed hearing the history, seeing the pictures, and going on a tour of the an old coast guard ship (although the guide was hard for me to understand). They also repurposed an old fish factory into the museum which is cool. Like everything in Iceland, it's overpriced for... More
