Vesturbaejarlaug- Neighborhood Swimming Pool- Icelandic Style
Jul. 2021
First: learn how to say "Vesturbaejarlaug", from an Icelander! It is of the neighborhood swimming pools with hot-tubs frequented by Icelanders. On an grey, late-afternoon evening in July, I made my way on foot from my hotel in the Grandi section of the city. IMPORTANT: No photography allowed! *** One must follow the self-cleansing rules upon entry (as in all Reykjavik swimming pools!) *** Shoes off before entering the locker room (male & female separate). Shower with soap, naked, then put on your swimming suit. Soap dispensers are on the wall. Bring your own towel. The long pool is great for swimming laps, then the hotter pools and cold plunge are for soaking. Great relaxed atmosphere & outside in the fresh air! I met some other travelers while relaxing in the hot pools. There is an indoor steam/ sauna area, which I did not visit. Shower afterwards, then dress and put on your shoes outside the locker room to exit. Near by is a café where locals are hanging out & socializing. Just before the kitchen closed at 8 pm, I ordered a delicious sweet potato soup which came with a slice of good bread spread with humus. Great meal after the swim. Still light outside in mid-summer, I walked back through the residential area to my hotel. Slept well that night.

Perfect local thermal pool
Feb. 2020 • Family
Authentic local thermal pool leisure centre. Parking available or walkable from city centre with a map/google, walk past a beautiful church and past typical pretty icelandic houses. Good price. Put items in your locker and take towel and bathing suit in to shower before you enter. Yes you have to shower naked but they are female or male only showers and it is a bit awkward if you arent used to this local custom but liberating to see nobody cares what you look like, all shapes and sizes are welcome! Then on outside into the thermal pools. A laned swimming pool and 2 thermal pools, with bubble jets and sitting areas in pool. Hot when you first go in but so relaxing to be in thermal water outside in cool air. Spent an hour or so here in Feb 2020. Actually sat in thermal hot pool with snow falling! Amazing! Everybody friendly and many nationalities/walks of life welcome, not just locals. Not touristy but just very enjoyable experience. Skin feels invigorated once you get out. Highly recommend for an authentic thermal pool experience.

Lovely local pool
Jun. 2020
Oldie but goodie, Vesturbæjarlaug is the traditional pool for locals living in the centre of Reykjavík.

Not much to be said about this place: this is your typical Icelandic pool. You can swim, you can relax in hot pots, you can go to the steam bath or the sauna.

Ultimate local winter morning in Iceland: come at 9am in the wekend, lay down in the shallow pool next to the hot pots and watch the sun rise.

Quiet and relaxing
Mar. 2020 • Couples
After an exhausting day on various trips/excursions this was the perfect was to relax. The warm water was beautiful. Staff very friendly and helpful, they taught us the etiquette (showering naked, keeping the changing room completely dry, etc).

I enjoyed the lack of loud tourists and people taking selfies.

This is the way to relax!

Wonderful

Stayed in an airbnb 10 mins walk from here, when we mentioned blue lagoon or secret lagoon to our she laughed, and told us to go here instead. As it was we ended up at secret lagoon as part of a day out but cannot recommend this place highly enough. It became our absolute favourite place and I know others have rated this over the blue lagoon too. It was never really crowded and swimming and bathing under clear blue skies in sub zero temperatures is invigorating to say the least. There is a sauna and a steam bath next to the pool with 'hot pots' or various temperatures. Only about £6 entrance, altho the second time we went it was free! Blue Lagoon? No thanks.

Relaxing pool, tubs, steam and sauna away from the tourist crowds
Feb. 2020 • Solo
Perfect way to unwind after a day of hiking or sightseeing about town — and this neighborhood jarlaug does not get jammed with afternoon and evening tourists like Sundhöllin. If you are not using a City Pass and you tell the desk you are a visitor, you just might get free admission, though you’d still pay for towel and/or swimwear rental. Being in the hot tubs in frigid weather with falling snow, you quickly understand why this is such a prozed social activity.
