I adored it alot. First of all the grotto and catacombs underneath are large and you can take your time walking around them as they have a lot of history and their use changed throughout time.
The art collections they hold here are amazing too and I recommend going.
One thing with Malta is it tends to be better Museum hunting when the heat drops a little as if I was to do it in the heat it would have been difficult!

The Museum is undoubtedly one of the most interesting buildings in Rabat: it is the ancient palace of the Grand Master Wignacourt which houses both the actual museum, including a collection of art and furnishings from the Baroque era, a labyrinth of Punic hypogea , Roman and Christian with interesting architectural features, the Second World War anti-aircraft shelters with two main corridors and around fifty rooms, and finally St. Paul's cave, the place where St. Paul would traditionally have found shelter during his stay in Malta. The ground floor consists of a corridor with some rooms used as offices and minor collections while on the opposite side there is a large garden with a built-up area which once included the refectory of the Chaplains of the Order and an oven which during the Second War World II provided more than 2000 loaves of bread to the population of Rabat every day.
The first floor is the main exhibition space, as it houses an impressive art gallery with works by Mattia Preti, Antoine Favray, Francesco Zahra and other Maltese and European artists. It also includes a collection of 17th-19th century Spanish, Italian and Maltese silver. The ticket costs only 6 euros and it is a site rich in history.

This felt like a very high class local history museum, with an eclectic mix of exhibits. However, all enjoyable and the variety keeps it interesting. St Paul’s grotto is a particular highlight (the museum seems to be the only way to access the grotto). Not too busy.

This was a huge disappointment. Not for the paintings etc. The temperature outside was 93o. I think inside it was much hotter. There is no AC and infrequent fans in the hallways. The air was so stifling, I literally could not breathe. I would love to visit again in cooler weather when it is more comfortable to enjoy the works.

Was a little disappointed given the price. Though you get to see the nice church as well as the museum. Lots of gold and metal artefacts in there. Some catholic clothes worn by bishops etc.

Interesting and good value for money
When you get off the bus, turn left rather than going towards Rabat and after the visit head towards Rabat. You will save a little time under the blazing sun.

The ticket to the museum also gives you access to St Paul’s grotto and the catacombs. My partner and I had an interesting visit to all 3. A few issues should be shared, firstly we had an audio tour which was helpful but each entry was extremely long which makes it hard to focus. The museum was extremely hot and everyone was standing next to the fans. Lastly the museum worker was extremely overzealous and started shooing people out at 4.25 despot the museum not closing till 5. So don’t go there hoping it will be open till the time it advertises!

This big and elegant building build in 1610 by the "Grand Maître Wignacourt" has recently been refurbished and is located outside the old Roman City and you can also visit the wonderful St-Paul's Grotto, built under the church where the Pope Jean-Paul II came in 1990. This particular place has a very special atmosphere and you can admire interesting paintings and sculptures.
At the same place, you can also circulate in the St-Paul's Catacombs, dated from the 2nd to the 5th century, underground cemetery, dug in the rock.

Wigancourt Museum is a very well organised museum located in the center of Rabat. This is a bonus while you're visiting the WWII catacombs and the St. Paul's Grotto, being included in a combo ticket. There are a lot of religious artifacts and paintings that are worth to see.

Hi, I have time for visiting only one catacombs, and I would like to know what do you recomend me. Saint Paul or Wignacourt catacombs?
Thanks
Written December 12, 2018
Hello, Saint Paul's catacombs is much bigger and more famous. However I found it very busy. The Catacombs in Wigancourt, were just as interesting and there was almost no-one there, which made it very atmospheric. Also the Museum at Wigancourt was worth going to. I would recommend Wigancourt of the two. Take a small torch to see into the noks and crannies!
Have a lovely holiday.
