About
Visible from far and wide yet so close you could almost touch it, the emblem of Liechtenstein towers over Vaduz on a rock terrace which can be reached along a romantic footpath. The castle was first built some 700 years ago. Since 1712 it has been in the possession of the Prince of Liechtenstein. Furthermore, since 1938 it has been the residence of the prince’s family, so it is not open to the public. The 12th century keep and the structures on the east side are the oldest parts of the castle.

- SummerasalifestyleMalibu, California3,550 contributionsPrivate residence for the princeA great walk up the hill. Lotsa signs on the trails kinda like an encyclopedia explaining Lichtenstein, history, geography, culture and industry. Arrived at castle to find it’s a working castle for the Prince and closed to the public. Nonetheless, a good walk and an easy way to learn of this great country!Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten October 8, 2023
- Kamal PByron Bay, Australia8,398 contributionsWe visited at a time when the castle was undergoing maintenance workDuring the time of our visit to Liechtenstein we found that the Vaduz castle was under maintenance work and major part of the structure has been covered with scaffoldings for this purpose. However, we were very anxious to take the uphill walk to the castle precinct taking the hill side pathway. It was at times tiring but enjoyable seeing the gradual unfolding of the panoramic view. On the trail we observed some beautiful flowers, mosses and pretty vegetation. Certain parts of the trail were unsealed but not slippery. Once we reached the plateau like area on top, we walked along the pedestrian walk by the side of the road leading to the castle. Even though we could not see the castle in its true form we were able to imagine how beautiful it must be. From the castle precinct there was a beautiful view of the valley below and the mountain ranges beyond. The plateau was like a grassland and very picturesque and soothing to the eye.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten January 25, 2024
- carpediemejcGainesville, Florida172 contributionsA very strenuous hike that was worth the effortMy husband and I were lucky enough to get a fabulous, clear day in February to see this place. I had read that the hike up the hill to the castle was a 20 or 30-minute steep hike. I am not in good shape, so I had to rest a lot. It took me 30 minutes to hike up the very, very steep hill. It was worth it! The views of the Alps and the castle make the most astonishing pictures! The Prince still lives in the castle, therefore, you cannot go inside. But, there are informational signs on the way up the hill that tell you about the country, the government, the royal family and more. It was excellent.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten February 7, 2024

The castle is a 15 minutes trek up the hill.. if you walk slowly then 30 minutes. The pathway up the hill to the castle is not to steep but pace yourself and you will get there. The castle itself is grand and is adorned with the flag of liechestine. The area offers a splendid view of the city of Vaduz.

The Vaduz Castle looms above the town of Vaduz. Like everything in Liechtenstein, it appears very neat and orderly, despite being 700 years old. The Prince of Liechtenstein lives in the castle, which is reportedly only open to the public in August.

Unmistakable. The castle that exists high up a cliff. The central attraction of Vaduz. Go in August when invited into castle ( I heard) otherwise not allowed in. Tours take you around the paths.

Came but couldn't go in. I came in late afternoon, it was beautiful with these autumn colours and spectacular views over the castle. There is also a hiking trail nearby, although I couldn't complete it as it was too late. Really nice to walk here and take pics if you're into photography.

Gorgeously situated and impressively well-preserved, definitely a must-see in Liechtenstein. Highly recommend having a proper tour and enjoying as well the surroundings. Liechtenstein overall has astonishing nature and is incredibly clean with perfectly arranged attractions and houses. It is by far one of Europe's gems.

When you are in Liechtenstein and you have time and you are interested to do a walk. I would suggest it to you. to walk to the castle.
The route starts near to the Rathaus you have to walk a steep path for a little bit and than a normal Stoney path. But on the path there are beautiful spots were you have a view Liechtenstein and the surrounding mountains.
The castle, originally a medieval castle, which has been changed over the years its a landmark of Liechtenstein today it’s used as the official residence by the Royal Family.
From the castle there are furthermore beautiful views.
Worth the walk!

You can't go in but did not care... The walk up to it from the town is lovely... Quiet and scenic. The final approach to the castle, with the hairpin bend, is really picturesque.

Vaduz in general is a lovely wee place and worth spending an afternoon in. I was there in April and climbed out of the town to the castle. Unfortunately there was building work going on but the walk to the top was really lovely and the views over this gem of a place were very special! spent the day smiling!! (",)

Hi,
If I drive up to the castle, are there handicapped parking spots so that we can get out and take some pictures?
Thank you,

Hello,
Is it possible for a tourist driving his own car uphill and park near the castle?
Written January 29, 2020
there is a parking lot two curves past the castle uphill. Parking more nearby would get you a fine...

Is the castle open to the public one day a week?
Written March 31, 2017
It is never open to the public, although once a year, 15th of August, during the national holiday there’s a party in the gardens (this is what I was told).
