Breathtaking views and very interesting history

This was part of a northern Cyprus tour and was very interesting in many ways. We would not advise for anyone with mobility issues as it is very steep to get around.

The castle and its ruins command fabulous views over Kyrenia and its coastline. The climb is well worth it. Although there are steps all the way, they are steep in places. Parking is limited and taken up with tourist buses. The drive from Kyrenia to St Hilarion is pretty drive with great views of the coast.

This is amazing. Built on a steep hill overlooking Kyrenia, the remains of this castle are simply breath taking, as is climbing to the top. However, once there, the views are stunning. There's so much history to this place, and as Health and Safety are not as strict as in the UK more of it is accessible.

Very ancient castle with amazing views. Beware of many steps you will climb. A must see! Visit with sportive clothing.

It takes a bot of walking up fairly steep stairs, but go all the way to Stage III - it is totally worth it. The views are incredible and the various remains of forts and castles are in good shape. Go in the Spring when it's green; the Royal Apartments looked like "Tintern Abbey". It was a struggle for our... More

Situated above a military zone (no photos allowed), this ancient castle is brilliant. Recommended - good walking shoes or trainers. A stiff climb but well worth the effort.

St Hilarion was one of a series of fortresses the Lusignans erected in the 1200s. The Castle is situated just outside Kyrenia and you'll need transport to get to the entrance. The fortification is in three parts, with the royal apartments at the top. It's quite a climb to the top but do make the effort as the view west... More

As historic castles or their ruins go, this is a fairly good one. It has allegedly inspired many fairy tales (or perhaps the movies made on them) and these are said to include the tower in snow white... The ruins are for most part well preserved and give you the sense of history and when you do reach the top... More
