It really was worth the ride from Wien. It was the first concentration camp I ever visited, and it really has an effect on you. The entrance is free and the audioguide was 3€ (take it, it explains in detail every space in the camp). The tour took you into the spaces where the prisoners where kept, and explains every... More

Set atop a hilltop, the setting is wonderful but the horror within the walls is sickening. The nazis removed as much evidence as they could just before they were overwhelmed, so there isn't much left of the gas chambers. There is only 1 little one left remaining. But being in construction and seeing the size of the original main gas... More

We would not normally choose to come here, but as our cycling holiday took us very near, we felt we could not miss it. It is technically a work camp, not a concentration camp. The story was very clearly told with the excellent audioguide - I would strongly advise using the guide. We were often close to tears hearing the... More

This is one of the places that have shocked me, coming from South Africa. I was part of the Soweto riots, being a policeman. What has happened in South Africa, is a Sunday School Party against what has happened here. This was not apartheid, just plain murder. It was a great eye opener to me, studying the history of countries.... More

I must admit, I found this place moving. To be shown where prisoners slept and the fact that three men shared a bunk was incredible. It saddens me that human beings are capable of doing such horrid things. These places should remind us never to repeat wicked acts, never.

A well preserved, well maintained ground; a free experience that is so very worthwhile! I was speechless, the customer service, level of knowledge and helpfulness of staff was astounding... The museum, the artefacts, the handwritten diary entries, the well preserved gas rooms and incinerators sent shivers down my spine. The back story provided by our tour guide, whilst extensive and... This experience was surreal walking in the footsteps of history! The museum was very informative and well laid out because it was very easy to follow in the correct direction. Seeing the gas chamber and all the victims names were hard experiences yet I would still strongly recommend the experience. It's great to see history and make sure we do... More

A haunting visit but very educational and pleased we made the long trek up the hill to get there. A lot of the camp is still intact and very well preserved.

When you travel with the ferry on the Danube, you are all the time surrounded by the beauty of Nature. The historical buildings at Mauthausen is also spectacular.
