Overview
More
Among the 21 departments and institutions of the Joanneum Universal Museum, founded as the Joanneum in 1811, the Armoury is in a class of its own. Attracting around 55,000 visitors annually, it is the Joanneum's most-visited institution without an exhibitions role. Moreover, as the largest historic armoury in the world, it is a living memorial to a chequered, conflict-ridden past, whose bogeymen and prejudices are still with us.

I'm a gun nut and although my main interest is in modern weaponry this place really amazed me. The items displayed here are not the usual fully decorated shiny things you usually see in museums but real warcraft. Most of them never been issued though,...More

The guide was great and answered a lot of additional questions. All the armor is unused from the 1600s--so there really aren't any "battle stories" behind any of the weapons. Except for Napoleon invading and siege waiting them out until they ran out of water....More

In November you can visit the Armoury only with a guided tour, the English one starts at 13:00. The staff is incredibly nice, they almost seemed apologetic about the price increase for the guided tour (from 9 to 11,50 EUR/person, so a rather small increase)....More

This is one of the largest collections of armoury in the world and if you have a thing for armoury and is interested in the history of war this is the place to go! It is a quite fascinating collection. The museum is not too...More

The amount of armor and military items on displayed was the most we have ever seen! So amazed they were able to save so much! We had only 1 hour to go through the 4 floors - a bit rushed (we thought they closed later),...More

The Zwinger in Dresden has a fabulous weapons collection full of bejeweled swords and daggers, but nobody would ever think of using one. But the Arsenal in Graz is THE REAL DEAL -- no jewels, no museum back-lighting; just every manner of weapon from the...More

Nowhere in the world you will find that much of medivial arms and weapons. A must to see if you visit Graz. Not open during winter.

If they fleshed it out with a few paintings, records of battles or other related artefacts that would make it more interesting.

If you're into military histories and generally love armours, the Styrian armoury is for you. It takes anywhere between 30 mins to 60 mins to walkthrough all the four floors, and it is well-worth investing in a 24hour Joanneum's card to access this and the...More

Yes, take guided tour. It is much interesting then strolling around on your own. One of the amazing facts that you learn this way is that most of the items have not been actually collected for the display, but are the leftovers of the actual...More
