Beaautiful little graveyard behind the church giving you a good idea about local funerary traditions. Some gravees aree opulent, others more simple but all characteristic of local traditons. Worth the detour

Short visit

Came here with my wife - a Sound of Music fan. The cemetery is quaint and historic, but for us it was worth about 10 minutes stop. Much of the movie scene was filmed on a set so not exactly as you find it (which is the case with most film locations anyways).

Beautiful little cemetary

This is one of the oldest cemetery in Salzburg and though small, was beautiful and really peaceful and quiet. Definitely worth visiting.

Unexpected delight
Jul. 2020
Towards the end of 'The Sound of Music', the Von Trapp family hid behind the tombstones in the Petersfriedhof cloisters. This is an incredible place to wander in to: there are 3 beautiful chapels to visit, along with the Catacombs hewn in to the rock face, as well as the many graves which include that of the composer, Haydn. It's also free admission with the exception of the Catacombs which cost a very reasonable 2 euros to get in to. There are several ways in, but don't be put off by the unexciting exterior: this is a real gem and worth every minute you might spend here.

Cemetery of the Sound of Music
Jun. 2019
This is a great place to walk and visit. However, both for its beauty and notoriety from the Sound of Music, it is a little more crowded. I will say with the flowers and monuments it may be the prettiest cemetery. In addition you can visit the catacombs that have been cut into the mountain behind and get a good view of the cemetery.

It is one of those places you have to visit and you easily can walk through. Take the time to visit.

This is a very unique grave yard, old and well maintained. Definitely worth a walk around. I believe the graveyard scene in Sound of Music is based on this graveyard (recreated in studio).
