It's pretty clear to me that Vienna is a cultural capital. The entire city exudes heightened sense of high charm and grace. It has 100 museums, 27 palaces, and 120 concert halls and theaters. Yes, one hundred twenty of them. One of the best place to start exploration of some of these is at the Imperial Palace itself. Right opposite... More

nice place wander, in the day or at night and look at the lovely architecture or the statuary. just to sit or walk. Central to Museum Quarter, the Library, the Hofburg, The Butterfly house (Smetterlinghaus) and about 10min walk from the Opera House.

This is a great place to just sit and take in your surroundings, you have the museums either side of you which are stunning buildings, the statue of Maria-Therese so lots of photo ops, buskers playing music, people sitting on the grass chatting, the sun beating down, just perfect.

A gorgeous way to spend a chilly winter's afternoon. Though the square is extremely busy when the markets are going on, the atmosphere is lovely. The mulled wine is served in a gorgeous boot shaped mug which was a delightful keepsake. Would highly recommend this to people travelling to vienna for the Christmas markets.

This is a large public square that sits between the Ringstrasse with the Museum Quarter. Easily accessible from the Volkstheater U-station. Very popular Christmas market with a good mix of local crafts, food, house wares, and, of course, mulled wines. One of the better and less commercial of the Christmas markets.

The Maria-Theresien-Platz is a large public square in Vienna city, located directly at the Ringstrasse with the Maria Theresa Monument in the center between two modern Museum buildings

This is a beautiful square with mirror-like buildings on both sides and a lovely monument in the middle. You would probably pass here going from the Royal palace to the museum quarter.

Staying in Inner City

Neighbourhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
