We travelled to Vienna on a day trip from Bratislava so the canal wad our first view of the city. It's not particularly pretty or attractive but some of the graffiti is interesting and it does have character.

This has to be the worst sightseeing boat cruise ever. I'm really not exaggerating, the Danube is world renowned for its beauty and we wanted to see the best of Vienna by boat. The canal cruise is awful, drunks by the canal side, graffiti (and not particularly artistic), if you take this 75minute cruise enjoy a beer or 2 to... More

We had hoped that this would be a lovely boat ride up the Danube canal but were very disappointed. Graffiti lined either side of the canal walls, some might say art, we thought it spoilt the view. There was very little of interest along the route too. At least we stayed dry on a wet day. This attraction was part... More

There are few interesting sites along this canal boat trip. There is plenty of expensive food and drink, though. It was nice enough to sit and float up and down the canal, but there's really nothing worth seeing on the route.

The canal flows through the centre of Vienna but is not very attractive. Rather narrow with yellowy brown water the walls are covered with graffiti. The actual river Danube is a 10 minute ride on the U-bahn train and is at least more impressive sight than this canal.

This is an ok thing when in Vienna but as it's a canal it isn't a patch on what you can see in Budapest. It's also full of graffiti which has it's place - but not when it's sprayed on walls steeped in history.

Did the river cruise along the Danube canal (not the main Danube river). There is not much of great interest but the graffiti along the banks was especially good! Unfortunately trips on the main Danube do not start till April so the canal trip is the only river trip available.

The Danube Canal is not so great as the Danube river in Budapest. It is advisable to take a free ride using Vienna Pass and not to spend a lot of time here.

When anyone refers to the Blue Danube, they don’t actually meant this one here. The Danube is further north from the inner city and is a large river and definitely not blue. The canal is a branch of the Danube. This feels a lot like Berlin to me at first glance, with its compact banks, it’s summer ad hoc beaches... More

Staying in Leopoldstadt

Neighbourhood Profile
Welcome to one of Vienna’s trendiest quarters. The second district has witnessed a turbulent ride, from medieval swamp to vibrant Jewish quarter, from pleasure ground for the noble and humble to current hip residence and workplace of Vienna’s creative crowd. Cross the Danube Canal from the city centre and take in life on Taborstrasse with its mix of old townhouses, churches, theatres, discount shops and ethnic restaurants. Head for Augarten via Karmelitermarkt, Leopoldstadt’s trendy marketplace. Baroque Augarten itself hosts a bizarre mix of manicured hedges and flowerbeds in front of a colossal World War II defense tower, the publicly accessible 300-year-old Augarten porcelain manufactory, the palatial boarding school and funky concert hall of the Vienna Boys Choir, and the modern art museum TBA21. At its opposite corner, The Prater not only houses the Giant Ferris Wheel but blends a bustling amusement park with lush woodland, perfect for a bike tour. Further east is the old derby racing ground of Krieau.
