Neighbourhood: Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

- Michael KStockport, United Kingdom360 contributionsAnother huge Vienna showpieceLike most things connected with the Hapsburgs the Kunsthistorisches Museum is on a massive scale and you need to be selective in what you want to see. It faces the equally huge and architecturally identical Natural History museum across a grassy piazza so make sure you choose the right one, we almost didn’t but the small sculpture of an elephant outside gives a clue to that being the natural history one. Inside you are faced with the usual ornate columns, richly decorated plasterwork, domes etc. Initially we thought photography, as elsewhere in some of the places we visited, was banned but then we realised it was tolerated so long as no flash was used. We got a bit bogged down on level 0.5 - room after room of ceramics and gold and silver objects before realising the paintings are actually on level 1. It’s a huge collection and trying to see it all would induce fatigue but helpfully a free printed guide is provided which indicates the most notable paintings in each section. Captions in German and English, on a plinth running round the rooms which is a good idea as it also stops you from getting too close to the artwork. Large Titian and Bruegel collections and also some good Canalettos and Caravaggios, but ifyou’re interested in English painters it’s probably not for you as there’s very little, it’s mainly Dutch, Italian etc and an awful lot of it religious art as you might expect.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 20, 2023

- CMC1,127 contributionsKunstschatziAttended the 'Kunstschatzi' which is once a month evening event with a DJ and cocktails in the Cupola Hall. In October the evening was named Sinners and Saints, but theme changes each month. The DJ was playing banging house, and the cocktails were excellent. We then wandered around the museum a little bit drunk. There were also frequent free guided tours. An interesting experience which seemed to appeal to the Viennese of all ages. Bought tickets in advance but I saw there is a ticket office outside selling on the night.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten November 19, 2023
- Twomaples489 contributionsLose Yourself in BeautyFrom the moment I walked in the door I knew I would not have nearly enough time to see everything I wanted to. The building itself is a gem and can easily distract you from the exhibits. There was a respectful hush throughout the building and I loved the sofas that were arranged so you could just sit and drink in the magnificence of the masterpiece paintings lining the walls. An easy walk from a subway stop it has a café and a gift shop filled with items that reflect what was on display throughout the museum. Well worth the entrance fee, but budget lots of time!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten November 20, 2023
- echoatanOntario, Canada196 contributionsExploring ViennaIt would have been wonderful to see the Christmas Market during the night, but due to the weather, it was rainy, wet, and damp, and it was not conducive for health reasons. We came home with some cough and colds and laryngitis, but it's worth seeing the palaces and its history. We plan to go back during the dry season and explore more by going to other places nearby.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten December 13, 2023

- JanC225 contributionsGreat place to absorb several millenia worth of real ArtFar far, far better than any of the other art museums. This place is lovely. Huge, interesting, and educational. If you are thinking about going to both the belvedere and this one, I suggest you spend two days visiting this one and skip the Bellevedere completely. There is an impossible amount to see and tonnes of history and art that truly gives you. the coin exhibition, the tonnes of masterpieces from Ruben's, Caravagio, etc. Egyptian and Greek historic ceramics and stone carvings, vast amounts of Austrian history, and much much more. Great job, and on certain days, it is open to 9 pm at night, too.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten December 17, 2023

Other than being a spectacular art museum, the building and especially the central staircase were very beautiful. The museum’s collection is vast and would recommend taking advantage of their website to view the collection and plan out what to see. Including a lunch break, we spent 5-6 hours covering the entire museum. One nice thing though was in the picture gallery, there were many comfortable couches to rest your feet. The picture gallery was by far the more popular of the exhibits with the room featuring Bruegel’s paintings being quite crowded. Other than the picture gallery, the Kunstkammer should not be missed as it has an amazing collection of antiquities. On the second floor by the central staircase is a cafe which was busy, but very beautiful as you are seated under the dome. We purchased the combined ticket online with the Treasury that had discount compared to purchasing separately and saved us from having to wait at the ticket office. In the basement, there were numerous lockers (needs a 1 Euro coin that you will get back), coat check, and a large gift shop. During November and December, there also is a Christmas market outside that was very busy on the day we visited.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten December 19, 2023

Just to view the buildings interior is worth the price of admission. It is stunning. The treasures seem to on forever, so you need to choose what interests you. We purchased tickets for the special exhibition of Caravaggio / Bernini. ( My wife and I are big fans of Caravaggio). Unfortunately, we were disappointed with the special exhibition. The original works of Caravaggio were few, it was certainly not what was advertised. The majority of the pieces were by others of the same time period. The one interesting find was the ability to instantly recognize the great master's work from those of lessor artists.

The Kunsthistorisches Museum ("Museum of Art History”: a.k.a. "Museum of Fine Arts" or “National History Museum”) is a great art museum in Vienna, located in one of the two palace buildings with Maria Theresa’s statue in the middle. The palace building with this art museum is to the left side of Maria Theresa’s statue when you look at the statue from Ringstraße. The art museum has very impressive collections of fine arts and decorative arts. This museum is our favorite museum in Vienna. Everytime we visit Vienna, we spend a few hours in the museum going over its enormous collections. Last September, we visited this museum as one of our routines in Vienna. Upon entering the museum building, its elegant lobby with stately staircase and the impressive artworks displayed on the ceilings and walls greeted us. The museum’s impressive fine art collections and “sculpture & decorative arts” collections alone demanded about 2 hours of our time. The picture gallery’s collections included artworks by great masters such as Raphael, Michelangelo, Titian, Rembrandt, Reubens, etc. The collections of sculpture & decorative arts were so intriguing and charming. The museum’s layout of the display chambers are visitor friendly unlike huge size museums like Louvre, Uffizi, and Metropolitan Museum. This fine art museum is a must-visit museum in Vienna, followed by the museum in Neueburg with great Collection of Ancient Musical Instruments & Collection of Arms and Armour. The family visitors with children would find the “Museum of Natural History Wien”, located in the building just across Maria-Theresien-Platz, greatly please their children.

This museum has so much to offer that it's a mammoth task to do it all in one day. I did manage it and it took me 6 hours with quite a lengthy pause for lunch (about an hour I'd say).
The museum has a lot to offer. Ancient Egyptian and Babylonian sculptures and artwork, some of the finest furniture and sculptures from the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Countless paintings by Rubens, van Dyck and others. It can be completely overwhelming if you don't pace yourself!
I would suggest that you read up on the exhibitions and plan ahead for what you want to specifically see, otherwise you can get lost amongst a dozen fine paintings of "Virgin and Child" without being able to stop and appreciate the beauty in each one. It's one of the best collections of fine art in the world, and if that's what floats your boat then it's worthwhile.
The food is also very good and reasonably priced. I had a three course meal and it was superb, the wait staff were also really great.
A note on the current coin exhibition: As of March 20 there is a coin exhibition. Unless you're into Roman Emperors and their coins, it's either very worthwhile or totally boring. Personally I found it really interesting (I'm interested in ancient Rome and it brought it to life for me), but there were a lot of very bored looking people in that exhibition. So unless you like that, don't bother with it.

A wonderful historic museum to visit. I would take the time to take a look at the map and visit the specific areas that really interest you. We enjoyed particularly the Egyptian section. It's not large by any means but still very interesting. The British Museum has a much larger and comprehensive area for obviously historic reasons. We also enjoyed the section that had numerous complicated clocks and sculptures. The audio guide was very informative. Tons of paintings to view and if you use your audio guide, you could literally spend all day there. So again pick your particular interests to save time.
There was also a central cafe there that was quite busy for lunch but the food there was actually quite good and reasonably prices and provided a break in the day. We just stuck to sandwich's.
Would absolutely return in the future. Enjoy.

We had a great trip to this museum, we arrived and walked straight to the ticket counter with no queue to buy our tickets. We walked straight inside with no wait and they ask you to place backpacks in the lockers. You will need 1 euro to use a locker, then get the coin back at the end.
The museum was beautiful inside, the architecture is amazing and the exhibits interesting.
The only downside was the cafe in the centre of the museum as the waiters are very rude. They were rushing around and coming off as stressed and we asked a waiter for our bill three times, each time the waiter nodded his head to confirm he saw us and then ignored us and went to other tables to collect plates etc instead and walked past us several times.
Other than that the museum is a must see.

This was on my list of places to visit during my week in Vienna. Yet another amazing building. I spent 3 hours on the paintings on level 1. Hardly saw any of the other exhibitions. A couple of paintings particularly grabbed me: Prodigal Son by Pompeo Batoni and Tower of Babel by Pieter Bruegel. Cafe is beautiful but expensive... €5.40 for a small coffee that was nothing special.

This museum is such a labyrinth, you could easily spend a full day wandering around through the many floors. There was something to see for all artistic tastes, while the building itself was simply a work of art. An exercise in Teutonic opulence, I expect the marble contained in this building would easily stretch over 10000 kitchens...
The Museum is quite easy to get to, the D tram around the ring road will land you very close to the majority of the attractions in this wonderful city.

When we first saw pictures of the palatial staircase, this museum was definitely on our list to see. “Kunst,” as we named this museum, did not disappoint. For us, it ranks in the top category with the Louvre, the NY Met. and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. Kudos to all these museums allowing patrons to use their cameras without flash (unlike the Sisi Museum). We gave it a good try for 2 hours and know we missed plenty.
The “awe” factor took over as we took one step after another upwards. On one level is the Antonio Canova statue of “Thesus Slaying the Centaur.” Like the entire entrance area, this white statue portrays the magnificence of art and how it can move the soul.
There are several floors of artwork, mainly those of the Habsburgs. This museum along the “Ring Road” and the Natural History Museum next door was built at the same time with similar architecture in 1891.
My favorite painting was the “Tower of Babel” by Pieter Bruegel. Maybe this favoritism is due as I remember seeing this piece in my college art book. I come to find out that there were actually three similar painting made. One of which was lost. The other painting half its size is located in Rotterdam.
As we were leaving, my wife spotted another section of Egyptian era artifacts. Other rooms had Greek and Roman artifacts. There is so much to see! Hope to come back someday.
We paid individual tickets as the American travel writer Rick Steves did not recommend the Vienna Pass. We took our time and enjoyed what we did see in 5 days in Vienna. High on the list was visiting the “free” Hundertwasser House; viewing the oldest Ferris wheel in the world at Prater—which my dad took a picture of in 1953. Seeing St. Stephens Cathedral was interesting, but we enjoyed more the Votivkirche church found in the Sigmund Freud Park. We did buy a tram/subway ticket good for a week. Tram #1 around the Ring Road became our favorite mode of transportation.

The museum is well organized and has interesting collections. The building itself is an architectural jewel, similar with it's sister that hosts the Natural History Museum, also located in Maria Theresien Platz. The ticket price is 16 euros for an adult and I think it totally worth it. When I visited this June, there was an antique Egyptian and Greek collection, which was super intereseting, well organised and cared for. The painting collection is also amazing and contains pieces from famous painters and artists. You need at least half of a day to see it and enjoy it as it deserved. Last floor hosts a cafe, where the staff is really nice and you can feel as a royalty.
